Grasshopper Manufacture. Success Corporation. From sewer green paint to pocked and peeling mint green. The entire space was about thirty paces across and five paces deep. The train moved on. Avery leaned over the tracks, peering into the dark tunnels the train had come from and gone into.
She nudged Snowdrop. If you use the runes for the Gate of Horn with certain tools, you can reinvent the train into an elevator. Otherwise, it has the form the majority give it. Avery nodded. Avery frowned. I think it worked only because we were on the train. And that was an in-transit type thing. The Promenade is big. Things that buy them time. Maybe enough times they can figure something out. Shane and Kimber. The betrayal, info getting out.
We got you involved, then things went to shit because of them. He looked over at his uncle. Flexing your diplomat muscle? He looked grim. Part of the Cakewalk. From this train station to the next train stop. The good is that you three are very competent Finders. I got you, champ. Cliff looked down at her like he was trying to fight suppressing a sigh.
He jerked a thumb toward the stairwell. They walked over, and they stopped, looking up at the long, narrow stairwell. Leading up to the Cakewalk. The close call was close enough we decided against it. They started the climb. The entire place had the sense of a place that was both traveled enough that passerbys broke stuff or wore stuff down, but disused enough that nobody came to fix it.
The stairs had metal braces for traction at their edges, but the occasional one was broken. The lighting was similarly broken — one in every ten or twenty lights, at least. The problem was the occasional case where both happened. This seemed like one spot of the Paths that could be connected to the Abyss, which would fit.
She opened her mouth in the process, and Wiggle flew out. She tripped over a step, because they were still climbing. Snowdrop made a small sneezing sound. Wiggle seemed to be okay, confirming yes, and doing a playful twirl, a little less glamour trailing behind her. Are you…? You know? She glanced around the group, and saw a sidelong glance from Cliff.
God- gods and spirits. Is it a problem? Like this big symbolic gesture. Ominous words for the steady staircase ascent to a dangerous Path. Avery ran her hand along the wall. Tiny bits of paint flecked off. For some stinkbutt like her? Who may or may not be an architect. I make mistakes. I get caught up in stuff. Cliff turned around, looking down at Avery from about ten stairs up. Focus on the Path. But Miss, and the others, they said if I did that, people I deal with might take me for granted, or get greedy.
What do you want from me? Cliff was shaking his head, not even making eye contact, shoulders turning slightly away, like he was ready to turn and walk away. It echoed in the stairwell. I gave up my rope and spare rope to get Esme and Lance out! At least he was making eye contact.
He descended two stairs. Emulate Avery. I nearly lost and had to rebuild my relationship with my brother because of you. I did that rebuilding by telling them there was a chance. A chance we could bring you in. Without ropes, because I gave everything! My mentors gave me a lot of power to work with but that comes with responsibilities! Start to finish! That there was interest? My cousin and cousin-in-law are traitors? Who the fuck am I supposed to trust?
Because I am fucking here Cliff! A pound hamster wearing what looked like an overelaborate bondage getup was the only apparent passenger.
Muzzle, high collar, criss-crossing leather straps that each had decoration. Avery surreptitiously checked her phone as the hamster moved on. The delayed ring was a message from Lucy, catching up as the magically boosted service provider found her. Free ribbon at her wrist. Nothing magic or anything big. Just… material. She situated it in the light, so the High Summer glamour would have more to grab onto and represent.
Drawing up a flat surface, at first. Matching it to the walls, then letting details fill in, while she cut out something else-. The footsteps were getting closer, walking the length of the truncated, train-car-wide platform. Ribbons meant things in the Paths. Ribbons were often a warning. She hoped that was a secret terminology that an expert in the field would catch onto. She backed off, hands raised, glamour tinted to be one-way.
Giving them a view down the length of the stairwell, some blurs of color obscuring, while the woman at the bottom would look about a hundred feet up the stairs and see a dead end. A young woman appeared at the very bottom of the stairwell.
Avery could look at the phone, then look at her. Her original best friend. That graduated to the breast , classic and normal in every sense, then to the respected and vaunted boob , which was technically a shorter word on paper but was longer when said, and heavier, a low sound, bass.
Then anything up from there got into the bazookas, the bazongamongas, and so on. Then Olivia had turned the discussion toward dicks and if there could be a similar system for those, and for some reason, the discussion had lost half of its steam. For some reason. Like nothing she saw in real life would really stand out or surpass this in sheer impact.
The woman had white hair that looked like a wig, with ringlets big enough in places Avery wondered if she could put her arm through them, but most prominently, the woman was a member of Wunderkand who had an outfit. The outfit in this case was a corset-style top with a scoop neck that scooped out a whole lot, and pushed what was there up and forward.
The effect, even from a distance, was that what was there trembled and jiggled with every small movement, like water in a glass- in a goblet , that was threatening to spill with every step its carrier took. There was also a dress, short in the front and long in the back, with cascading frilly layers disguising the shape of the ass, and high boots and a croquet mallet.
They retreated up the stairs, being careful to not make too much noise. Avery drew a silence rune on the wall, outlined it as a barrier, and Clayton nodded. And shoulder rubs. The woman tapped the ground with the croquet mallet as she sauntered forward, taking her time on the first few stairs, approaching the glamoured barrier.
Her familiar took its time approaching. The glamour was blown away. Scraps of ribbon trailed through the air, disintegrating as they blew this way and that. Then she frowned. She walked up the stairs, taking her time, and they retreated about as fast as they could without provoking her to do anything more sudden, moving slightly further and faster than she was. She swung the croquet mallet at the wall where the silence rune was.
The rune was destroyed, concrete shattered, and a ten-foot-by-ten-foot chunk of the wall was consigned to oblivion, blown up, demolished, the chunks disappearing into emptiness beyond. Her wolf advanced, taking its own time, and stopped when its head was near her knees.
You even coordinated to grab the tickets at the same time, then went to the same place. What does coming from there to here do to this Path? She moved the end of the mallet slightly toward the top of the stairwell.
The familiar brushed past it, padding its way up. What the heck is that familiar? Why is it so big? Want to try? Live to fight another day. Guess my familiar but give me nothing else? But if you give me neither? She started walking up the stairs. Mallet for you. Nervous, which is understandable. She takes precautions, in case something goes wrong. Which it usually does, often in little ways. She brings a powerful magic mirror. Her plan is to fight fire with fire.
The reflected Wolf abandoned its wolf guise. It became an old woman, tall, with white roots in black hair, an addled smile. She put one foot in front of the other, advancing at the same pace, one hand at the wall to steady herself. Each time she pulled her hand away or let it drop, fingernails gouged concrete. Let me walk away with my prize, after my standard deal, of course. To better secure it, to ensure that if Wunderkand wanted what I had, I needed to make it so they had to go for the complete package.
I established the Familiar bond. A reflection. But a reflection of the Wolf? Not a Wolf, but the Wolf? Wunderkand has had seven others try doing what I did. But for me?
The money and power make up for it. Giselle walked slowly up the stairs. She ascended a step, then swung right, smashing out a chunk of wall there. Another three steps, swung left, smashing out another chunk of wall. Caught between a Wolf and a Wolf place. She broke another wall to her right. Only a bit remained between the two holes to the right, and it cracked, breaking away. The jiggle of impact rippled across her chest and over to her shoulder, where there was enough tissue pushed up by her top that it could do the shimmer-wobble thing too.
She swung, knocking out the left wall. Soon she was going to be ascending a staircase with oblivion on either side of it. No walls to keep the ceiling up. Giselle nodded. North East. Regional heads answer to me. They hauled the door open, then ran through. As they moved to slam it behind them, the Wolf broke into a run, laughing that addled , off-kilter laugh.
Cliff had a box of adhesive bandages, and quickly stuck them around the doorframe. He pushed Avery out of the way so he could get another angle. Cliff stepped in, drawing on the door itself. A seal. The door banged, heavy, as the Wolf reached it. Avery hurried to slap down some spell papers on the wall, floor of the hallway, and then as they started to glow, ready to go off, she connected them with lines.
Spirits here were slow to answer. Like they had to wake up from long naps, or gather the requisite energies. That bought her time. If one was one second from going off and she tied it to one that was three seconds from going off, it became a two second timer for each. She kept going, as fast as she could, slapping down more, drawing lines. An explosion rune with a sixty second timer bought her some time, even if those sixty seconds were split about twelve ways-. Cliff stepped back from the bandage application and tripped over Avery.
He nearly fell, and Avery was bowled over, falling onto her side. The door banged, hard. The cracks opened wide enough Avery could see the light from the stairwell through the gaps.
The recently drawn portion glowed, fighting to override the timers in other portions of the network. It was Giselle who broke through, using her mallet. She paused, adjusting her head like she was fixing a crick in her neck, then saw the papers.
She assessed the setup, stepped through quickly, and without even turning around, reversed her grip on her mallet and used it to smash out what remained of the doorframe. It was obliterated, consigned to oblivion, leaving a void behind her instead of a way down to the train station.
Giselle stepped backward into oblivion, being swallowed up by it in the same second everything went off. Explosions, wind, water, and fire. Boxed in by the same lines Avery had used to connect everything together.
Those lines disintegrated, and the group of them had to back up and away. Avery glanced back over her shoulder. The Path itself was indoors, inside a large but dingy apartment. A crowded large and dingy apartment. About fifty Lost inside. The catch to this space was that it was organized by a certain logic. Miss had provided some information on that. Then kitchen, then dining area, which was more or less the staging ground.
Six more rooms were for the party itself, with most of the guests standing or milling around there. Good thing, too. There were streaks of blood on the walls and ceiling.
The floor had been kept mostly clean- but there were no guarantees there. A partial hand was in the dustpan that was situated beneath a broom, hidden off to one side. Three fingers and a thumb. Other places were worse. This was just the entryway and getting obliterated in the entryway was rare. Adorea looked back at the doorway to oblivion, then kicked the shoes and upended the coats, throwing them around. The Path was upside-down and backwards in a lot of ways. They tended to appear at the end, which Avery figured was a way to minimize the hassle of having to get dressed and ready for every passer-through.

In The Kane Chronicles crossover series, she also uses Sadie Kane’s wand when it turns into a dagger similar to the one Luke gave her. Annabeth also owns an invisibility Yankees cap, a gift from her mother.
Annabeth also has dyslexia and ADHD. Luke Castellan was a year-old son of Hermes and May Castellan. In the musical, he is portrayed by James Hayden Rodriguez. Charlie Bushnell will portray Luke in the TV series. Introduced initially as the friendly head counselor of the Hermes cabin, Luke is revealed to serve Kronos at the end of The Lightning Thief. He is resentful of his father, who adhered to the gods’ policy of non-interference despite May Castellan’s mental illness.
He ran away from home at a young age and eventually arrived at camp with Annabeth Chase and Thalia Grace. After the loss of Thalia, a failed quest and continued silence from Hermes, his ongoing resentment turned into a strong hatred of his father and the other gods. Described as decent and kind before Kronos, he behaved with volatility and violence after his defection.
Though Luke originally served Kronos willingly, the horrors he witnessed during the Battle of Manhattan convinced him to fight against his former master, eventually committing suicide to stop the Titan. When he died, Luke reiterates what Ethan Nakamura had told Percy before: unclaimed children and unrecognized gods deserve more respect than they have been given. Percy later fulfills his request. Luke is described as handsome, with sandy blonde hair, blue eyes, and a long scar on the side of his face, given to him by Ladon the Dragon.
Besides the ability to open locks with his mind, inherited from his father, he is an excellent swordsman. It is later reforged as Kronos’s scythe and has the ability to harm both mortals and immortals because of its double edged blade, half steel, half celestial bronze.
From Halcyon Green, he receives a diary he later entrusts to Chiron, and a celestial bronze knife he later gives to Annabeth with a promise to always remain her family.
From his father he receives magic flying shoes, which he later curses and gives to Percy, but Percy gives the shoes to Grover. Just before giving himself over completely to host the spirit of Kronos, Luke bathes in the River Styx and obtains the invincibility of Achilles. Due to her mother’s abusive nature, Thalia had considered leaving home since she was little, but stayed to protect Jason.
When Jason was seemingly stolen during a visit to Sonora, Thalia finally ran away and stayed on the run with Luke and Annabeth until they met Grover the satyr when she was When they reached camp, Hades sent a horde of hell hounds that Thalia held off, sacrificing herself for her friends.
Zeus pitied his daughter and turned her into a pine tree; her spirit then provided a magical barrier around the camp, keeping mortals and monsters out. Seven years later, she is purged from the pine tree with the Golden Fleece , which was applied to save it from poisons that were destroying the magical barrier protecting the demigods.
At the end of The Titan’s Curse , she becomes the lieutenant of the Hunters of Artemis, which freezes her age the night before her 16th birthday and prevents her from being the child of the prophecy. Thalia has bright blue eyes and spiky black hair, and wears black eyeliner and punk style clothing. Jason describes her as having a Mediterranean complexion. Annabeth and Chiron remark that her personality and character traits like her bravery and loyalty are very similar to Percy’s.
She also shares some traits with her father, such as his pride, confidence, and vehement reactions to betrayal or contradiction. An incredibly skilled warrior, she is willing to attack even Luke, who was known as the best swordsman of the last years. Thalia’s weapons are the shield Aegis, disguised as a silver bracelet, and a spear disguised as a Mace can. After The Titan’s Curse , she also uses a bow and hunting knives, given to her by the Hunters of Artemis. Her main power is the ability to summon lightning and generate electric shocks.
In The Titan’s Curse , it is revealed that she has a rather ironic fear of heights , despite being a daughter of Zeus. She got her fear of heights when she was in Apollo’s sun chariot specifically when he told her to drive. In The Lost Hero , she embraces her brother Jason for the first time in years, only to learn that he had lost his memory.
She is described as looking around 14 years of age, although it is later revealed that she is well over years old. She is also later then revealed to be a former Hesperid, daughter of Atlas and Pleione. She had brown eyes, slightly upturned nose and long dark hair braided with a silver circlet on the top.
It is also stated by Percy that she gave him the impression of a Persian princess. Although her ethnicity or race is never specified, she is known to have copper-colored skin. She is said to have the same cold look in her eyes as her father, the Titan Atlas.
She then gifts him her hairpin, which turns into “Anaklusmos”, currently in the possession of Percy. As a reaction, she came to hold a grudge against male heroes, especially those who reminded her of Hercules. Once had they ran into her, Luke Castellan, and Annabeth Chase. She also is said to speak in an old, strange accent, more heavily when upset.
It changes too often! She also addresses Percy, telling him that she is honored he carried “Anaklusmos”. When Percy is forced to take him to camp, it is revealed that he is a baby Cyclops and thus a son of Poseidon, making him Percy’s half brother. In the films, he is portrayed by Douglas Smith. Tyson is tall with unkempt teeth and fingernails, brown hair and eyes.
He is mentally about 8 years old, but very intelligent and compassionate. As a son of Poseidon, he shares some of Percy’s powers.
As a Cyclops, he is immune to fire and has super strength, an uncanny ability to mimic voices, enhanced senses, and understands the “old tongue” the language spoken by Gaia to her first children. Tyson is close with several characters and magical creatures in the series, including Rainbow the hippocampus, the hellhound Mrs. O’Leary and the harpy Ella, who eventually becomes his girlfriend. In The Sea of Monsters , Tyson first appears as a huge homeless kid that is taken in as a class project by Merriweather Prep, Percy’s school.
Tyson is sensitive, childish and bullied with Percy being his only friend. However, it’s also suggested that Tyson’s presence in Percy’s life has shielded him from attack throughout the year as monsters are too afraid to attack Percy while he is with a Cyclops.
When Laistrygonian giants attack in the guise of a dodgeball game, Tyson’s powers as a Cyclops shield him from harm and level the playing field, allowing him to defeat several of the giants before Annabeth Chase intervenes to finish the job. Due to her own bad experiences with Cyclopes, Annabeth reluctantly takes Tyson with them to Camp Half-Blood where his immunity to fire proves to be vital in defeating the attacking Colchis Bulls.
Annabeth reveals Tyson’s true nature to Percy and the young Cyclops faces a great deal of prejudice from the other campers due to his monster heritage and frustration from Percy when Poseidon claims Tyson as his son, causing Percy to be bullied as well. The sole exception to the bullying is Charles Beckendorf whose father, Hephaestus, employs Cyclopes, causing Beckendorf to befriend Tyson and train him in metalworking. When Percy and Annabeth secretly depart on a quest for the Golden Fleece , they only reluctantly take Tyson along and he befriends the hippocampus Rainbow who transports them to the Princess Andromeda.
While attempting to enter the Sea of Monsters, Tyson is apparently killed when the CSS Birmingham explodes as Tyson is attempting to fix the engine at the time, the only one capable of withstanding the extreme heat. Tyson later resurfaces on Polyphemus’ island, having survived the explosion before being rescued by Rainbow. Polyphemus calls Tyson his half-brother, but Tyson helps Percy to defeat Polyphemus, rejecting the other Cyclops for his evil ways. After returning to camp, Tyson repairs and upgrades Percy and Annabeth’s chariot for the second chariot race and provides them with weapons.
His gift to Percy, a wristwatch that Tyson had spent the summer working on, turns out to be a shield which proves to be vital in their victory. Afterwards, Tyson reveals to Percy that having faced a hard life of constant monster attacks, he had prayed to their father who had led Tyson to Percy. Having received an offer to work in Poseidon’s underwater Cyclops forges, Tyson departs on Rainbow, saddening Percy who has come to see the Cyclops as a true brother. In The Titan’s Curse , Percy keeps in contact with Tyson through Iris-messages, although Tyson’s new job and Percy’s own responsibilities make this somewhat difficult to manage.
At the end of the book, Tyson reveals that he has gotten permission to take the summer off and return to Camp Half-Blood. In The Battle of the Labyrinth , Tyson returns to camp and repairs Percy’s wristwatch shield which had been damaged while fighting the Manticore months before.
Tyson joins the quest through the Labyrinth to find Daedalus and is at first excited to meet his idol Briares who they rescue on Alcatraz Island. However, Briares had become depressed, as all of his siblings had perished and lost the will to live, disillusioning Tyson. When Grover sets off on a side quest to find the missing wild god Pan , Tyson decides to join him despite his nervousness and allergies around satyrs.
Tyson takes part in the final battle with Kronos’ forces. When Briares arrives to help, he credits Tyson with his decision to help and he calls Tyson the true hero. In The Last Olympian , Percy encounters his brother again a year later when, after the destruction of the Princess Andromeda , he ends up in Atlantis. Although the city is under siege by the ocean gods allied with Kronos, Poseidon refuses to allow Tyson to fight, leading to an argument between him and Percy because Poseidon believes that Tyson is too young to fight and must instead be protected.
Following the defeat of Kronos, Zeus commends Tyson’s bravery by making him the General of the Cyclopes. Due to Tyson’s preference of a club for a weapon, Zeus promises that the gods will find him a suitable club. When Percy’s memories begin to return and unable to Iris-message any of his friends, Percy manages to contact Tyson through a dream.
Percy instructs his brother to find Ella the harpy and to meet him near the Caldecott Tunnel. After his quest, Percy summons his hellhound Mrs. O’Leary at the tunnel and she arrives with Tyson and Ella, leading to an overjoyed Percy and Tyson reuniting. Ella comments on Tyson’s bravery and Percy notices that his brother is blushing, causing Percy to tease him about the romance blooming between Tyson and Ella. Tyson participates in the Battle of New Rome, effortlessly killing the Cyclops Ma Gasket and her children and also battling Earthborn spirits with the help of advice on their weak spots from Ella.
After the battle, Tyson is present when Percy is made praetor of the legion and when the Roman Senate discusses the approach of the Greek demigods. After Ella issues a prophecy, Percy discreetly orders Tyson to take Ella away, not wanting Octavian to learn of the harpy’s knowledge of the lost Sibylline Books.
After things go south, Percy contacts Tyson and orders him to take Ella to Camp Half-Blood where the harpy will be safe. When Reyna, Nico and Coach Hedge are cornered by Michael Kahale, Leila and Dakota on a yacht near Camp Half-Blood, Tyson unexpectedly arrives to help with Ella, who is now his girlfriend, and Rainbow, using his ability to mimic voices to mimic Octavian and trick the Romans into disarming themselves.
Taking advantage of the surprise, Tyson effortlessly knocks Kahale unconscious with a single blow to the head, which is notable because Kahale is stated to be so strong that it takes someone with an immense strength to overpower him. During the final battle with Gaea, Tyson leads the friendly Cyclopes against the Earth goddess and her monster army.
Afterwards, with the powers of prophecy no longer working, Tyson joins Ella and Rachel Elizabeth Dare in traveling to New Rome in the hopes of reconstructing the Sibylline Books, the only source of prophecies left at the moment.
In The Tyrant’s Tomb , Tyson and Ella have settled in New Rome where the harpy has been using her photographic memory to reconstruct the lost Sibylline Books while the harpy and the Cyclops run a bookstore at the same time. Ella’s transcriptions take the form of tattoos on Tyson’s skin rather than being put on paper, something that Apollo finds to be awkward to deal with.
Tyson also has his girlfriend give him a tattoo of his friend Rainbow. Tyson and Ella help Apollo Lester to decipher the prophecies surrounding the current threat from Caligula , Commodus and Tarquin and later to perform a ceremony to summon Diana for help against the emperors and Tarquin’s undead legion.
The two are still in Diana’s temple when Tarquin attacks their bookstore, looking for the Sibylline Books. After the battle, Tyson and Ella rename the bookstore Cyclops Books and provide Apollo and Meg with the first part of a new prophecy that directs them to return to New York City to face Nero. It is said that Nico had a crush on Percy ever since he saved him.
At the end of the novel, it is revealed that Nico is a son of Hades. Though he appears to be ten years old, he and his elder sister Bianca were born in the s. After Zeus killed their mother Maria di Angelo, daughter of an Italian diplomat, whilst trying to kill the children, Hades wiped their memories and placed them in the Lotus Hotel, a place in Las Vegas where time stands still.
He is native to Venice, Italy and can speak Italian. Nico is initially depicted as cheerful and childlike, with olive skin and dark hair. He enjoys playing Mythomagic, a mythology-themed card game similar to Magic: The Gathering. He takes the death of Bianca very hard, becoming moody, secretive, and irritable.
He becomes angry at Percy, who swore to protect Bianca, but later forgives him. Afterward, he lived in the Underworld with Hades, where he becomes pale and shaggy-haired and begins wearing dark clothing.
Nico, despite being very powerful, is extremely lonely, much like his father. He makes nearby people uncomfortable, partially due to his unnerving weapon of choice: a sword made of iron cooled in the Styx “Stygian iron” , capable of absorbing monsters’ essences rather than banishing them to Tartarus.
Stygian iron, unlike celestial bronze and Imperial gold, can harm both mortals and immortals. Nico’s suggestion that Percy takes on the curse of Achilles and his work to convince Hades to fight in The Last Olympian is crucial to the Olympians’ success and earns him a short bout of fame.
He is privy to the fact that there are two camps, one Greek and one Roman, before The Lost Hero , making him an important liaison between the two groups in the latter series.
He brings his half-sister Hazel back from the dead and establishes her at Camp Jupiter. At the end of The Son of Neptune , Nico travels through Tartarus to find the monstrous side of the Doors of Death, an experience that leaves him haunted and weak. In The Blood of Olympus , he nearly dies several times while “shadow-traveling”, which involves melting into shadows and teleporting himself to different places.
His sister, Hazel Levesque, whom he brought back from the dead, is the daughter of Hades’ Roman identity Pluto. Although their attraction for each other is hinted at in The Blood of Olympus , they are not seen getting together.
After the three-legged death race, he is seen assisting Will to treat the injured patients. At the end of the book, he helps Apollo and the others fight after his and Will’s canoe capsized. At the end of the book, Nico is convinced that his friend the Titan Iapetus or ‘Bob’ is calling for help from Tartarus despite his apparent death in The House of Hades.
Nico decides to try to find out what happened to the friendly Titan with Will’s help and rescue him if need be. Rachel is a mortal girl who can see through the Mist, the force that obscures gods and monsters from most mortals.
Her father, Will Dare, is a rich businessman, a fact which she is rather adverse to. It is hinted that she has some romantic feelings for Percy which are noticed by Annabeth who becomes extremely jealous. In The Last Olympian , she has strange visions about the war. Later, after she talked to Chiron, she decided to become the new Oracle of Delphi, according to her fate. She gave up her feelings for Percy to her duty. Her appearance makes things easier for both Olympians and Greek demigods.
Her first act as the Oracle is to deliver the next Great Prophecy, setting the plot of the Heroes of Olympus series. Following the loss of Delphi to Python, as revealed in The Hidden Oracle , Rachel stops visiting camp and begins a frenzied attempt to regain her foresight, not helped by Apollo’s disappearance.
Once informed of Apollo’s arrival, Rachel returns and learns that not only Delphi is lost, but also three other Oracles, and that only Rhea’s Dodonian Oracle is still valid. She becomes upset upon learning of the existence of other Oracles, as Apollo hasn’t told her before. She plans to take the summer off before returning to work as the Oracle full time. She also provides Nico and Will with a prophecy. She has red hair and freckles, is skilled at painting and drawing, and occasionally shown as a non-ADHD foil for her demigod teammates.
Percy remarks on her ability to stand still for a long time at a charity event. Due to her power of foresight, Rachel knows a great deal of knowledge before she learns it herself. Clarisse is a daughter of Ares and the former lead counselor of the Ares cabin at Camp Half-Blood, Clarisse is hot-tempered, courageous, strong, an incredible fighter, usually using an electric spear given to her by Ares, and a good military strategist.
She can be stubborn and overconfident, much like her father. Despite their similarities, Clarisse has a fear of her father and his anger at her if she should ever disappoint him. This, along with a strong sense of honor and pride, often motivates her actions. She also fears the Labyrinth because of what happened to her boyfriend Chris Rodriguez before she saved him.
She is aggressive towards most demigods, including Percy, though she does respect and make friends with a few, including Percy, Annabeth, and Silena Beauregard. Clarisse makes frequent appearances throughout the novels. Enraged after the loss of her friend Silena, she later joins the battle with a fury reminiscent of her father’s, slaying a drakon singlehandedly and receiving the blessing of Ares. In The Hidden Oracle , it is stated that Clarisse has gone to attend the University of Arizona and her role as counselor is taken by her half-brother Sherman Yang.
In the film adaptations, she is portrayed by Leven Rambin. In the musical, she is portrayed by Sarah Beth Pfeifer. Dior Goodjohn will portray Clarisse in the TV series. Will Solace is a son of Apollo who is a native of Austin, Texas and the son of an alt-country singer named Naomi Solace. He is stated to be the camp’s best combat medic and runs the infirmary. According to Will himself, he lacks the archery skills of the other children of Apollo due to his inherited gifts being for healing rather than combat.
Nevertheless, he is extremely brave and, along with his healing abilities, can emit a painful ultrasonic whistle and can glow. Will is LGBT , although his exact sexuality is never specified. Following the death of his half-brother Michael Yew in the Battle of Manhattan, he becomes the head of the Apollo cabin. In The Blood of Olympus , Will attends a head counselor meeting discussing the situation with Romans where he laments that he lacks the combat skills of many of his siblings due to his gifts being for healing.
However, Chiron reassures Will that he will nevertheless play an important role due to the inevitable need for healers. At one point, Will calms down Clarisse by touching her arm, which Nico di Angelo, witnessing the meeting through a dream, notes is an incredibly rare thing, as Clarisse would normally attack anyone who ever dared tried to do such a thing.
Will delivers Coach Hedge’s baby boy Chuck and, despite not being a fighter, volunteers to join the team sent to scout out the Roman positions to get a break along with Lou Ellen and Cecil. Will is reunited with Nico di Angelo and the two begin bickering over Nico’s use of his powers, which Will can sense are having a negative effect on his health.
Will also berates Nico for his plan to leave both camps after the war, stating that there are people who are or would like to be Nico’s friends if he would only give them a chance.
The team sabotages the Roman onagers and Will uses his ultrasonic whistle twice to help defeat attacking enemies. During the final battle with Gaea’s forces, Will and Nico confront Octavian who, being a Roman descendant of Apollo, is a distant relative of Will’s, although Nico notes that compared to Will, Octavian is watered-down and unhealthy looking, lacking anything that makes a child of Apollo special. Although Nico and Will both see that Octavian’s robes are caught up in the firing rope of the onager, Nico convinces Will not to intervene, leading to Octavian inadvertently launching himself to his death when he fires the weapon at Gaea.
In the battle’s aftermath, Nico avoids Will, convinced that the son of Apollo will now see him as a monster and want nothing to do with him, Nico having shown signs of a possible attraction to Will while working together on the battlefield.
To Nico’s surprise, Will forcefully tracks him down and orders Nico to spend three days in the infirmary recovering, berating Nico for avoiding him in the process. Nico comes out to Percy and admits his former crush on him before joining Will.
In The Hidden Oracle , Nico and Will are shown to have started dating each other in the six months since the battle. When Will’s now-mortal father Apollo arrives at camp, Will and Nico aid Apollo in his quest and in adjusting to being mortal. After the battle with Nero’s forces, Will treats the worst of the camp’s cases of hay fever caused by Apollo’s plague arrow. In The Tower of Nero , Nico has become depressed following the death of Jason Grace on top of all of his other losses while Will is supportive and concerned for his boyfriend.
During the final battle with Nero, Nico and Will help Apollo alongside the troglodytes, with Will at one point suddenly arriving with Camp Half-Blood reinforcements, as Nero apparently has the upper hand. Following Nero’s death, Will coordinates treating everyone’s injuries and helps Apollo prepare for his final battle with Python.
Two weeks later, Apollo, now a god once again, visits his son and his boyfriend where Will talks about a possible date in Paris using Nico’s shadow traveling. The two reveal that Nico believes that a voice that he’s been hearing calling for help from Tartarus is Bob , causing Will to playfully wonder if he should be jealous before Nico clarifies that he’s talking about a Titan. Will plans to join Nico on his mission into Tartarus to try to find out what happened to Bob and to rescue him if he can, enlisting the help of the troglodytes to get in and out.
Rachel provides them with a prophecy. Calypso is the daughter of the titan Atlas, who is imprisoned on the island of Ogygia for supporting her father during the first titan war. She falls in love with Percy and is heartbroken when he has to leave. Smiling Others were crashing into Wunderkand, and the suited, sometimes gussied up members of the corporate Path group were fighting them back. Roughly equal in number, maybe. And Wunderkand had a lot of forces to deploy.
The thing seemed to be that if a Lost was removed, it was replaced. Maybe it was the same one popping up near the back. Maybe it was new ones, getting off of trains, immediately breaking into smiles and moving on the tiles. But Wunderkand was strong. Even the lowest tier guys and ladies in suits were pretty darn competent.
Maybe on par with or more competent than Adorea. And, technically, since they had means of getting out in an emergency, regrouping, and coming back, they too could return, like the smiling Lost were doing.
Maybe the turnaround was longer, but they needed to do it less. The catch, really, was that for every bit of progress they made, the harder it became to advance. It started to roll forward, and she adjusted her position, running along the top of it, Snowdrop beside her. It moved forward faster than she could run backward along its length. It curved upward as it pulled out of the station. She slid down one car, putting a foot out, and stopped as her foot hit a ledge- a ventilation hatch.
And she leaped from a train that had gone up as much as it had gone forward. She twisted in the air, curving her body and letting the wind push her around a hundred and eighty degrees, and then she threw the spell card. Another twist in the air- trying to get her feet under her, before she went spread eagle, coat open, cape fluttering behind her. Blocking the wind. Her toe made contact with the ground.
Ground rippled, and smiling Lost around her lost their footing. She reverse-jackknifed, straightening, stumbling forward, traced her steps, and then took a step to her right. There were too many, and there was too much going on.
There was no way to track their full motions, no escape except to go over the edge, and if she hung from the edge, she was pretty sure the Wolf would come. Wunderkand had drawn up battle lines across two thirds of the Promenade, extending across the foot of the stairs that led up to the bridge that ran through the center, and across the rightmost footpath. Wunderkand attacked, pushed back, used summoned Others, and drove them back.
Making a few steps of progress at a time. Others were coming to reinforce. So she retreated. Down toward the footpath that was on the left, if coming from entrance to endpoint. Mostly empty. Some Lost lingered, and some Wunderkand people were taking shelter. Places to lick wounds and regain stamina, before replacing others at the inching progress on the front line. Avery drew the attention of smiling Lost down toward those cafes, before triple-stepping and leaping up onto the bridge.
Some waited up for her there. A Lost fellow was spraying so much urine from his dick that he was airborne, spiraling in the air, body ragdoll limp.
Or as one extended gold tile, hurrying along its length while the clock allowed. His head went down, his pelvis went up, and he skidded about twenty feet along the bridge, bowling two smiling Lost off their feet. Avery passed one collapsed stall place with a tarp over it, pulled the tarp free, and chased the guy. She could see Cliff and Adorea below, trying to navigate. For right now, she ran after the peeing man. She threw the tarp over her back, reached for his arm, and hooked her elbow at his.
The tarp protected him from his damp and stained clothing, and she was able to spiral with him for a second, grounding him, before pressing him against the railing, extending her arm back, and hooking her left elbow with his. Back to back, elbows interlinked. She could hear him throw up.
Opossum Snowdrop reached up, pawing at the back of his head. He sounded badly injured. She moved. It felt like moon walking. She had a shitty -or piss-poor, rather- jetpack, and it boosted her forward and up, the spray constant behind her.
She bounded over, toward the Lost, and sprayed the Wunderkand mooks who were bothering Cliff and Adorea. Something probably broke or badly sprained as he went down. She could paint the tiles. She could lure the smiling Lost.
They came in as a trickle, then a river. A collection of smiling Lost now attacking from behind. She air-shoed her way up, went way higher than expected for a landing on the bridge, tarp fluttering around her, and then landed on the left side. Did them way dirtier.
More control? She ran, dodging, shucking off the tarp and letting the pissing man have it. No time to tie cords or set him up. Together, they advanced. With her Sight, she spotted the guy who was directing projectiles- a Wunderkand guy wearing suspenders and bellybutton high pants who was hiding. Others lurked nearby, using magic items and practice circles to produce flurries of projectiles that they were aiming at smiling Lost until they could start shooting Avery again.
She used a spell card optimized for long distance. A spark of flame that exploded into a patch of burning ground. Forcing suspenders guy back. Like, two city blocks. She tried two more spell cards, but they were interfered with before they reached their destination. Wunderkand Lost came after her, forcing her down off the bridge, onto the one side, and leaving her running. If he got bound by Wunderkand, that was it for him.
No control, no oversight. You help us, we help you get rid of the guys turning this into a real warzone. And saw more of the projectiles curving lazily in the air, veering back toward them.
Clayton managed another seal in the air. They were tricking and interfering with those other guys. She went. The projectiles rained down at her. But she did have to stop as part of her pattern of movement, so that forced her into awkward patterns, where she had to move to awkward spots or backtrack before being able to move under temporary cover.
She led them out, down the length of the Promenade. Some smiling Lost had trailed after her and filtered down this far, so she used it as an example case. Smoke was everywhere, rain was coming down, and the sound of fighting filled the Promenade. Various Lost practices and weird Lost quacked, exploded, and screamed. More zeppelins kept taking off only to find excuses to be taken out of the air and crash land.
A lost did. Giving Avery clear movement forward. Keeping that smiling Lost stuck by a wall for a solid ten movements. Avery gave him a thumbs up, before moving to avoid the projectiles. It looked like Adorea was trying to stop the guy now, but it had turned into a back and forth where he had a torrent of never-missing shots and she had some next-to-zero-accuracy Lost party tricks that made him keep his head down for that one percent chance something could actually hit him and do serious damage.
Not ceding ground? Except when you draw a flank around to their sides? That Giselle woman might have already figured out a good bit of it. They went for it. It moved them right. Past the lines of smiling Lost. They ran, coast made clear by the cooperating Others, but Giselle was there, far right, swinging her mallet back and forth, her reflected Wolf charging forward, using raw strength.
None of the smiling Lost were able to stand up to it or get past it. The mallet hit them like an eighteen wheeler, smacking them out of reality. The fake Wolf tore them limb from limb like they were paper. No fucking way. He pulled a sheaf of paper from his jacket. He let the wind catch them, and they blew out and back. They stuck to the air. Papers stuck end to end, forming a circle.
And another circle at the center. Giselle leaped over the railing, with way more grace than Avery would have expected for someone of her proportions, in a corset and long skirt. Giselle leaned back, hand at the railing.
Using the edge. She was using the edge. The pages finished glowing, then spat out a fierce shaft of fire that blazed a trail across the Promenade. Something that would bypass abnormal rules, act like a normal baseball would, ignoring the shenanigans and usual crap. But Giselle chose that same moment to move. Giselle, teeth clamped around mallet, reached for the burning false Wolf- grabbing the mirrored collar at her neck.
The Wolf ceased to be. Leaving her with a powerful magic mirror in her hand, her other hand gripping the railing. But she aimed the mirror down the Path, it glinted, light refracted, and the camera flare, sunspot, rainbow reflection type stuff that shone off it all gathered together.
And Avery could hear the howling laughter of the addled true Wolf, elsewhere. Further down the Path. The false Wolf reappeared, whole, directly ahead of Avery.
Wearing the mirror collar again, while Giselle held spots, camera flares, and rainbow refractions. She could see and hear the convergence. The laughter down the Path and this laughter aligned. It trembled at the edges. As the fire beam tapered off, Giselle sat on the railing, swung her legs over, and set her feet down on the other side, standing.
She walked forward, mallet and heels clicking against tile as she walked. You can have the glimmer of you I took back, destroy her. Then separate again? We go back to the status quo? The texture of her skin felt like it was fine tuned to be offensive, too papery, too moist and swollen beneath.
The Garricks remained where they were. As they did, violating the movement precept, the unsmiling, helpful Lost behind them started to smile. She walked, carrying Avery with her. Then she leaned in close to Avery, her breath sour with the smell of rotted teeth. Today I want to break you in other ways. The Wolf smiled. Avery averted her eyes, fighting. She happened to look down, past the darkness creeping in at the edge of her vision.
If one Other could reach out, one Garrick pull a trick out of his pocket to nudge me, you could touch it. I think, hmm, two will die. Cliff is strong, he has tricks. It will be the end of him.
Less than a millimeter. It would be a victory. Cliff Garrick. Especially bitter losses. Or try. She turned, Avery dangling, so close to passing out that just being swung around made her go black for a second. I want this done. And I need your help to clear the way to the platform. Thirty feet out, Avery realized, as she fell, limp, gasping out a breath, the surge of darkness that had been claiming her vision giving way to too-sharp alarm.
She reached out to Snowdrop with thoughts too fuzzy from being strangled to articulate full thoughts. Avery willed it. Snowdrop moved, forepaws moving, slashing through air, directing them. Download basics. A massive air rune, drawn in glittering gold, with lines. It took time to draw in air spirits, to wake them up. But the fireflies kept drawing, retracing their steps. Avery slowed in her fall, a cushion of wind beneath her, making her clothes and hair flap in insane ways.
She wanted it. Snowdrop articulated it. Redrawing the central part. Giving it another focus. An air rune and a push. And the air around Avery was smashed down. She went from an upward and a forward trajectory to one that sent her straight down , ten feet from the Path. Her hand out, she grabbed a cord that trailed from the bottom of the Path. She grabbed hard, and it ripped at her palm and fingers as she fought to find traction.
Her hand felt wet as skin tore and blood slicked the way-. She brought her feet down, clamping them on the wire, and hugged it full-body. A tarzan swing- a failed grab. But she could move her body. A rush ran through her, she swung her legs, reached again, grabbed on.
So she could reach to her wrist, pull out the black rope…. Punching it upward. She moved, bringing Snowdrop with, and grabbed a ledge beneath a train platform. She climbed, as fast as she was able. She got ninety percent back to pre-strangulation normal as she did. She peered past the railing. The smiling Lost were fighting Giselle and the Wolf. She motioned.
Snowdrop helped again. Providing two paws, twisting them in air to change colors. Red hair to black. She made it about two seconds before being noticed. A Wunderkand suit sparring with smiling Lost shouted once in alarm. The guy tried to get to Avery, but the smiling mascot-headed Lost was happy punching and tearing at the suit. She pulled away. Avery was fast.
She covered a lot of ground. People that saw her in the corner of their vision took her as a suited Wunderkand employee. Navigating the immediate crowd with one boon. And with a rush of wind, Giselle was kicked clear off the Path, two steps from the landing at the top.
She glanced to one side. Nobody was in a great position to get to the Path landing. The Wolf closed in. Trying to crawl backwards down the stairs, Avery slid down about three or four stairs on her tailbone instead.
Gouges on your face, for your girlfriend to wonder about? Taking your legs? She was against a primal force that was meant to foil her, break her. Something almost animal. Not going, not coming, not departing, not arriving.
Your girlfriend is one. But me? I had you for a long time. Shall we go for two out of three? Shall I keep you this time? Not for years. Avery tried to stand. The Wolf lunged a step, a mad look in her eyes. Avery fell back down onto her rear end. Like there was no point, like it was inevitable that things would go the way they had before. Cliff Garrick used a practice again. Throwing something- a piece of black paper with white writing.
It flew like a dart, or a swooping bird. The Wolf backhanded it out of the air. Master and familiar. Established at the start of this Promenade.
Paralyzed for life. Done by me, it will be permanent. Out of your jurisdiction. The words are written… only in your territory. Only in your Path. I have you. And I will see you soon. She could go down to help the three Garricks, but she climbed instead. Before she missed her chance.
Snowdrop took her hand and helped her up. Screw the Wunderkand Finders. Changing their focus. Ignoring Cliff, Adorea, and Clayton, now. The Wunderkand Finders that were coming through were replenishing their numbers at the start. This would take a while to clear out. Just a bit.
Guarding the end of the Path. Tell them, hm. He nodded, then sat down hard. She cut at his sleeve to expose bleeding wounds, and tended to them. She looked at Avery. They could sit, wait, watch, guard this spot. Until the Lost stopped smiling and everything reset before her eyes. The fireflies rested on her bracelet, glowing. She looked at Snowdrop. When that group gave up, retreating, they relaxed a bit. Avery got up, checked the sides, checked the sky, then turned, looking at the big set of double doors with the clock over it.
Cliff Garrick walked over. Clayton and Adorea went to his left and right, respectively. Avery followed. Avery reached between Adorea and Cliff, touching the wrought metal gate, almost two stories tall. Hinges squeaked, and doors swung wide. They got off the train, entering a train platform that looked like any number of little-used subway stops. An underground alcove with a set of stairs at one corner, a bench at another, and faded paint that had changed texture and hue from smooth where the lights had shone on it for too long.

The Cake Lady screeched from the kitchen. Others throughout the room turned, lunging. Giselle took her mallet from the reflected Wolf. Clayton, jostled, nearly dropped his cake. He recovered, but in a bad spot. There were Others coming from multiple directions, they barely seemed to see him-. By coordination, she pulled at the same time Snowdrop went small, and pulled Snowdrop clear over it, letting her turn human as she landed on the far side.
She took the cake and fought to keep it balanced. Clayton used a magic trick -maybe a magic item or boon- to get over the armchair, landing on the other side. He put fingers on one side of the cake stand Avery was holding, righting it. The Wolf was tearing through the various Others. Giselle smashed one hand with the mallet. It was smacked away quickly at first, then moved as if by slow motion, and then disintegrated over what would be five or ten seconds.
She smashed Todd. He exploded into a spray of body parts and maggots, and his silhouette lingered, moving in slow motion, a Todd shaped hole to some mixture of void and oblivion.
The Wolf lunged with barely any forewarning, claws gouging armchair and wall behind where Avery had been standing. Three Others leaped onto the reflected Wolf. Because they had to. Guy with the holes in his body and face wants to eat more than the guy with the sword-wang, who wants to eat more than the lady with scissors.
Adorea went over to Sword-wang, in room eight. They bolted. Avery threw a spell card to stall one Other that was swinging a weapon like he was trying to emulate a blender, giving Cliff time to slide by, then backed up toward the window.
As repayment, she clawed the back of his hand open, clear to bone. But when she pulled back and tried to pull away, the bandage held. Sword-wang came at her from behind, sword erect, pelvis ready, and she backhanded him, shattering sword, knocking his plate aside, and demolishing part of his ribcage.
She pulled back with more force, and tore half of the window-frame away from wall. With teeth, she bit into and tore at the wood, until only the chunk that was dangling by the bandage remained. The four of them had backed as far away from the window as they could. The Wolf pulled away another chunk of window. She attacked another Other that had come after her.
Just… strong enough to wade through a Path as dangerous as this one, smashing and killing any obstacles. The Wolf tittered, that addled, old-lady laugh that made Avery feel something a little bit like dying inside.
Like she was back to being her worst self. Especially here, so far from friends. Giselle held her arm out in front of her, forearm horizontal, level with the top of her chest. She placed the croquet mallet on the back of her arm, almost like she was lining up a pool shot. Giselle was aiming for the fire escape.
No platform, nowhere to stand…. Avery stepped back, tapping her foot three times. She flashed a smile at Giselle, mostly to try and throw her off her game. Then she leaped.
Straight up. She tapped a foot against the wall to adjust her trajectory a bit. It pushed her further out, just a bit, but also turned her in the air. The organization of the space blurred.
She could see through windows and walls to where the head of the Cake Lady was in an apartment above-. Not her focus. She tumbled through air, twisting- reaching down and screwing up her potential landing instead.
She fell almost face-first. To break her fall and keep from face-planting onto some Lost fire escape on the edge of the Cakewalk. The curtains billowed out. The Build Up boon. Curtains and ropes and things appearing as convenient when falling. Giselle hesitated, wary. To buy time, Avery moved her legs, wobbling slightly, still on her way down, kind of, delaying her descent a fraction-. Snowdrop pushed back. Pulling curtains over-. Avery collapsed almost upside-down onto Cliff Garrick.
The way the mallet seemed to work, it smashed things clean out of existence. At least temporarily. And it left messy holes in reality in their place. Meaning the stretched out curtain became a wall of hole-in-reality. One covering the exit Giselle needed to get at them. The Wolf was tearing away wall and brick. Cliff reached up, Avery still partially on top of him, and stuck finger to wall. Making the reflected Wolf have to tug a few times to get free. Slowing it down. He repeated the process again.
The train stopped, one car door open near the fire escape, and they boarded, leaving Giselle, reflected Wolf, carnage on the Cakewalk and everything else behind.
She could see the Wolf reaching out, tearing through the wall. You put my son in a shitty, shitty position, having him keep a secret.
Secrets destroy practitioners, you know that, right? Truth, enough the spirits know to pay special attention to what we say, gesture, write, whatever. Leave him in a position to keep a secret and keep you around, or be honest with his parents and walk away from you? Avery kind of resented parts of that that had to do with gender, because like… she really wanted to bring up the fact the core team had all been Garrick patriarchs and the promising maybe-future-leader Clay, going in.
But doing it now would feel petulant and it would only make things worse. Leaving it alone, though, it felt bad too. And if you want me with? If you want to try doing this? Come on over. But you gotta leave the extra stuff behind. And the current stuff?
Jude and putting him on the spot? For right now we have a bunch of problems. But either come on over, we tackle this thing, or stay, we go our separate ways. If you wanted to be fair, considering I saved your wife and nephew? Sure would be nice to have an escape rope.
It was my call. But if she was expecting him to put stuff aside to hash out later, she could do it too. Avery thunked her head back against the seat headrest, closing her eyes. Her foot braced against the leg of the table that was positioned between the seats, separating her and Snowdrop.
Snowdrop matched her, foot placed a little higher up, because her leg was shorter. Cliff had a bandage on his wounded hand. Crimson bled into the white, second by second. Avery leaned over, and saw Adorea putting away first aid stuff. The reflected Wolf got through the one glamour real fast, between the train and the Cakewalk. Easy couple hundred bucks, minimum. It was hard to let go of the tension from earlier, from arguing and being frustrated with him.
But she was trying. Adorea and Clayton ventured closer. Snowdrop wriggled her way under the table and sat by Avery, while Cliff sat across from her. He was gay. Just a guy doing something out-there in scary times, putting himself at risk.
Whatever you want to call it, however you want to put it, it was a bad time to be that way. But he did something similar to you walking over here. He traveled halfway across the world. Took what he thought was his share. My dad, uncle Walt, they did, they had to supply their new Finders. Me, I was old enough to be underway. But- he took a third. When there were three of them, seven or eight of us kids. He took a third. Or he had kids later, he wanted to make sure they got what they deserved?
Cliff sighed heavily. Kids went in with less equipment and stuff. My cousins, nephews. When they died, sure enough, conversation would go to my uncle. Peter and I, we were old enough to be around when he left, see the aftermath. See the casualties. I hear you. Shit that happened elsewhere, family shit? Not on your shoulders. My fault for making promises and sales pitches for you to keep. My fault if I look foolish after doing that.
I guess it would be. Sore spot for a lot of us. Especially the older generations. He craned his head around. Looking for a clock or something. They remained ready, ducked down. Their illusory copies were gathered, hiding a little less successfully. The decoys would run, draw attention-. Only moments later, the train jerked. Glamoured copies were thrown against the door. Glamoured Adorea lost an arm.
The rest of her began crumbling with increasing speed. The Wolf had gotten out in front of the train. The train car jerked again, then jackknifed violently. The rest of them were thrown free of their hiding places.
The train derailed, and the thing beneath the rails was empty Nothingness. Slowly, car by car, the train leaned out or stuck out over the emptiness. Avery motioned. The glamoured copies of the four of them that were still mostly intact headed for the window closest to the Promenade. Climbing out. Making the leap. Adorea had a window frame that helped make an easy exist, placed against the top of the train car, exiting into any outside space with a clear view of sky.
They climbed out onto the top of the train car, which was pointed sideways, almost completely away from the Promenade, and Avery borrowed opossum climbing process, scaling the length of the car, moving down and away. Into the space between the cars. The train groaned loudly as it teetered, moving closer to the edge. Both served as a bit of an anchor for the bits that had jacknifed and gone sideways.
The airplanes dove. Each loaded with a bit of Garrickstuff, and Averystuff. Scent blockers. Now glamoured bits and bobs were emerging from the wreckage of paper airplanes, scampering around. Blocking smell.
Some were taking the same route Giselle had. Fighting the smiling Others. The most successful of them were halfway down, but they were getting bogged down now. There were less Wunderkand people around. She could remember being stuck with the Wolf. Cliff was using a practice to walk sideways on the train car. Treating it as if it was upright. He crouched. To the second post office. Hurdling the counter the employees were crouched behind.
Dropping onto a red square. And I think you guys really want us on your side here. Not Wunderkand. The tape was put around Avery, then pulled on, spinning her. She was lifted up into the air, numbers flying off the measuring tape. Letters and envelopes lifted into the air. She did the whole transformation sequence, the mid-height flat cap with a brim, simple epaulets with envelope style patterns on them, big brass buttons, mailbag…. She found a stamp lying on the ground, amid the litter of the ongoing destruction elsewhere.
She licked it, then stuck it in the corner. Part one, apply stamp, part-. She lifted up into the air, turning. The uniform was pulled away, her regular clothes put into place simultaneously, to keep her modesty. She got her regular stuff back, then dropped to the ground. Now with a package of postal worker clothes with her, a coin in her hand. See what I can do. Or can I send them to you? With a sound rune to distort direction and source, she had Snowdrop shout. Black deer with glowing eyes stood everywhere.
Like lawns with way too many flamingos, or houses with too much in the way of Christmas decorations, but they were shadow deer with headlight eyes. She avoided making eye contact with any of them. The train passed behind some houses, pulling to a stop. The bar lifted up. The space between houses led to the open train car door. They jogged over. Into a mostly empty train car. It seemed like traffic was pretty light, considering the situation.
Good finding. Like, he could handle what he was doing, but he kind of shut down. But the Lost will be dense there. Every time we leave and come back, we arrive to less numbers. Even with Wunderkand there. We do any of that? We do it sparingly. Adorea, elbow on table, covered her mouth with her hand, trying not to smile at the innuendo. Avery managed to keep a straighter face. We owe you a lot.
You get a share of this. The words had been said. There was no strict schedule for when the train would arrive, so there was no way to time the speech or planning for their arrival. It became a weird preparatory silence. The train rolled over tracks, rocked occasionally at gusts of wind, and moved between night and day, sunset and rain like other trains passed into tunnels.
Here and there, there were fantastical sights outside, like schools of fish diving through cloud to ambush flocks of birds, or roads and tracks building themselves out of nowhere, or barren Paths on weird trajectories, spinning a thousand kilometers an hour, casting things away, or colliding with one another three times in the time it took the train to pass by them.
But mostly it was dense, smoke, clouds, mist, and white sky. And it was like, any second, the Promenade could come into view. Then it would be less than a minute before the train settled at its stop. She considered wearing a uniform onto the Path, but that came with complications. And she really just wanted the coast to be as clear and uncomplicated as possible for getting to the end of the Path.
Spell cards sorted. Tools and things set up. Familiar at her side. She ran her fingers through her hair, like she was going to put it into a ponytail. She looked at her reflection. Past the white clouds, there was a dark patch. The dark patch clarified, clouds peeling back as the train plunged, traveling along tracks with no ground between them and sky.
Lucy answered the group call first. Verona was a second later. Are you okay? I helped. Busy setting up. Terminals, temporary quarters, maps, gathering information.
They made it pretty far up. Next minute or two decides what months of work and preparation come to. Like a sports match, you know? Months of work, hard fighting, injury, all for minutes of actual play. The final period of a hockey match. Overtime in a soccer match. Weird question to be considering as her stomach plunged, train dipping, rollercoaster style, drawing close to the stop, barely slowing. Bird in the hand, instead of the two in the bush.
But they decided to slap away our offer. She hung up without waiting for another response. The train was slowing to a stop, and the back and forth could continue for a while.
The train doors opened. Not stepping on the tiles bought her time without having to follow the regimented movement. Being on top of the train bought her a vantage point to see.
His mortal life was not the best. He, like most demigods, was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. This made him the subject of bullying from his peers.
His mother was once married to Gabe Ugliano Smelly Gabe , an abusive, gambling-addicted alcoholic. His repugnant mortal odor masked Percy’s demigod scent, hiding him from monsters. Later, she married Paul Blofis, whom she genuinely loved, and they had a daughter named Estelle. Percy also found love at the end of The Last Olympian. In the films, he is portrayed by Logan Lerman.
In the musical, he is portrayed by Chris McCarrell. Walker Scobell will play the role in the TV series. Grover Underwood is a satyr and Percy’s best friend.
He has curly reddish-brown hair and fur, acne, and a wispy goatee. His horns grow larger as the series progresses, and he must take increasingly careful measures to hide them and his goat legs while posing as a human. In The Lightning Thief , Chiron states that Grover is small even for his age: He is twenty-eight then, but because satyrs mature half the speed of humans, he is considered a teenager.
Grover is quite sensitive and attached to nature. Like all satyrs, he can sense emotions and sense monsters and demigods. As the series progresses, his concern for his friends and the pursuit of his goals leads him to take on leadership roles and become more confident.
Unlike his demigod friends, Grover is not an orthodox fighter. Instead, he uses reed pipes or a cudgel. In The Lightning Thief , he gets a “searcher’s license” after delivering Percy safely, allowing him to search for the lost god Pan. When Polyphemus captures him in The Sea of Monsters , he activates an empathy link, a psychic bond with Percy created a year before that allows telepathic communication across great distances.
He uses this to guide Percy to his rescue. In the films, he is portrayed by Brandon T. Jackson and Bjorn Yearwood as young Grover in the second film. In the musical, he is portrayed by George Salazar. Aryan Simhadri will play Grover in the TV series. She has an extensive paternal family including Magnus Chase. In the film adaptations, she is portrayed by Alexandra Daddario and Alisha Newton as young Annabeth in the second film.
In the musical, she is portrayed by Kristin Stokes. Leah Jeffries will portray Annabeth in the TV series. She is described by her teacher Chiron as “territorial about her friends”, which is manifested in some moments of jealousy and distrust. In The Lightning Thief , it is revealed that she also suffers from arachnophobia , a fear shared by her siblings due to their mother’s relationship with Arachne, whom Athena turned into a spider.
Annabeth ran away from her father and stepfamily at age seven and encountered Luke Castellan and Thalia Grace.

Percy asks the gods to release her at the end of The Last Olympian , [3] but she is still residing there when Leo becomes trapped on Ogygia in The House of Hades , having been released from the curse of being forced to fall in love with all those to fall upon the island rather than the island itself.
Leo and Calypso subsequently fall in love legitimately. After Leo escapes, he swears on the River Styx that he will return for Calypso. At the end of The Blood of Olympus , Leo gets back to Ogygia and frees Calypso using an astrolabe that Odysseus had built for that purpose, although he was unable to complete it without a crystal from the island that Calypso had given to Leo on his first visit.
Despite this, the two secretly attempt to find a normalcy for their lives and later announce to Apollo that they are going to settle in Indianapolis , although they will continue to help him anyway they can. During The Dark Prophecy , Calypso regains her ability to use magic, although the goddess Britomartis suggests that she had simply lost control of her powers rather than losing them altogether.
With training from Josephine, Calypso begins regaining control over her magic.
He focuses on Immune ontogeny in HIV exposed infants, placental investigations and pre-term birth, and epithelial immunity in the foreskin.

Light shone through- not because this place was darker, but because smoke and dust from the fighting and destruction choked a lot of the sky on this side of the doors.
A city. A similar aesthetic to the Promenade, extended to something bigger. Parks and towering buildings, multi-layered streets kind of like what Kennet found had, except there was no baseline road below, no bottom. Just the arching bridges, paths, and connective tissue. Lost were already going from the Promenade into that place.
Like, matter of fact, nobody seemed to think it was weird it had been closed, it was just convenient now that it was open. Avery could feel it. It was supporting structure. And the structure it was supporting — at least part of it…. A metal cube, suspended in air. Bridges reached to it. It was damaged, clearly no longer suffering the function it once had, decayed from neglect and age.
Slowly, it turned in mid-air, one corner pointed down, the spinning with a wobble to it. The bridges and paths that extended to it formed a kind of halo around it, both horizontal and vertical. It looked like they could move, to be retracted or adjusted. There were others, though. A sphere of ice, with something dark within. And something that flickered when Avery moved her head.
As a sorceress, Calypso can command wind spirits to do her bidding. She loses most of her control of them when she gives up her immortality; however, she is still capable of summoning them to a degree, though by consuming more power than usual. Also, due to spending a long time at Ogygia, she has mastered sewing and lock-picking, which she uses while finding the gryphons at Indianapolis Zoo.
In The Tower of Nero , Leo reveals that Calypso is enjoying attending high school and is currently working as a counselor at a mortal band camp for kids. The two are currently in a fight due to Leo’s disrespectful behavior towards women, but both Leo and Reyna are sure that they will work it out when she returns at the end of the summer. Bob first appears as one of the main antagonists of the short story Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades which appears in The Demigod Diaries as well as the back of the paperback edition of The House of Hades.
He subsequently appears as a main character and a supporting protagonist in The House of Hades. In desperation, Percy throws Iapetus into the River Lethe which erases the Titan’s memories, leaving him with a childlike personality.
Percy convinces the amnesic Iapetus that he’s actually their friend Bob and Bob heals Percy’s injuries from the fight and aids him in confronting Persephone over her secret creation of the sword in the first place. Bob is subsequently employed as a janitor in the Underworld by Hades. In The House of Hades , while trapped in Tartarus, Percy and Annabeth briefly reminisce about Bob, inadvertently summoning him to their aid when the Titan overhears them. Percy is left feeling guilty after learning how Hades and Persephone used Bob as a servant while Nico would visit and tell the Titan about how good of a friend Percy is.
Bob acts as a guide and protector to Percy and Annabeth, his knowledge of Tartarus from his time trapped there proving vital in their quest to reach the Doors of Death and escape. However, the regenerative effects of Tartarus on monsters starts to heal Bob’s mind and slowly restore his memories, including the fact that Percy was the one who erased them in the first place. On one occasion, the group faces monsters who cast curses upon them that their previous enemies have left.
Bob hesitates to help until Percy apologizes for his actions and for being a bad friend. Bob also befriends Small Bob, a sabertooth cat inadvertently created and then destroyed by Atlas in The Titan’s Curse. Bob leads Percy and Annabeth to the friendly giant Damasen who heals the two demigods injuries, but is convinced that he can’t change his fate of forever battling the maeonian drakon despite Percy and Annabeth’s belief that the line of the Prophecy of Seven about “foes bare arms to the Doors of Death ” refers to the four of them: two demigods, a Titan and a Giant who should be mortal enemies under normal circumstances.
Ultimately, despite the return of his memories, Bob takes Percy’s advice to heart that he should take the parts of Iapetus’ past that he wants while leaving everything else behind and continues to side with them, showing disgust for his evil past. At the Doors of Death, firmly identifying himself as Bob rather than Iapetus, he faces off against the embodiment of Tartarus alongside Small Bob, Damasen and the drakon, to ensure Percy and Annabeth’s escape from the realm and the closing of the Doors of Death.
The four are presumably destroyed in the process, devastating Nico, Percy and Annabeth who recognize Bob as a true friend. Percy sadly fulfils Bob’s last request to say hello to the stars for him, Bob having wanted to see the stars again. Nico later reveals to Apollo that he believes that the voice is Bob, suggesting that the Titan had in fact survived his battle with Tartarus at the Doors of Death. Feeling guilty for leaving Bob behind, Nico is determined to travel into Tartarus and try to find out what happened to Bob and if possible, to rescue his friend.
Nico and his boyfriend Will Solace explain that they intend to enlist the help of the troglodytes who are capable of safely tunneling into and out of anywhere, even Tartarus. However, Rachel Elizabeth Dare issues them a prophecy that Will admits doesn’t sound good. She is a daughter of Bellona, a Roman goddess of war, and the younger sister of Queen Hylla of the Amazons.
She and her sister worked for Circe during the events of The Sea of Monsters where Reyna was one of the attendants who looked after Annabeth. After Percy and Annabeth escape and free Blackbeard and his crew, Reyna and Hylla were captured by the pirates before eventually escaping and going their separate ways. Reyna found the way to Camp Jupiter, where she belonged. She became the praetor of the Twelfth Legion just four years after she joined.
She would not trust anyone so easily, which was a good quality because she had a whole legion to lead. She did everything she could for her friends and family, which was everyone in New Rome.
When she found out about the Greek demigods, Reyna chose not to pursue revenge against the Greeks, despite her difficult history with them. She understands the importance of both camps united. She does not have a fatal flaw, unlike Annabeth. However, she could still not get everything she wanted. She could not find love, just like Venus had said.
In the Tyrant’s Tomb , she joined the Hunters. It is a sign of her overcoming fate, and living beyond other’s expectations. She is described as intimidating and a natural leader; she has glossy black hair and very dark brown eyes. Reyna is generally more used to responsibility than other demigods, as she is a praetor at Camp Jupiter. Reyna is often accompanied by two magical dogs, Aurum and Argentum, or by her pegasus Scipio “Skippy” dies after their trip from New York to Greece in The House of Hades after being slashed by a griffin’s poisonous claw.
While shadow-travelling to New York, the trio stops in San Juan and visits Reyna’s former house, haunted by the ghosts of her relatives. Reyna’s father an Iraq war veteran deeply loved the goddess, but his PTSD turned this love into an unhealthy paranoia. When Reyna was ten years old, he became a mania , or an evil insane ghost. When the mania attacked Hylla, young Reyna picked up the closest weapon and killed what remained of her father. Reyna is reluctant to discuss the incident because patricide is “unforgivable” in New Rome.
Eventually, Annabeth sensed that Reyna wanted Jason to love her back. In The House of Hades , Jason felt guilty for letting her believe they had a future together. In The Blood of Olympus , she daydreams about romantic activities with Jason like “romantic walks” and “sunset picnics. In The Tyrant’s Tomb , Reyna is revealed to be asexual and has always felt pressured to take a romantic partner, but didn’t understand why she never truly felt an attachment to anyone until Apollo hits on her.
In The Tower of Nero , after becoming a god once again, Apollo encounters Reyna who is settling in well with the Hunters and has been mentoring Leo Valdez in his behavior towards Calypso.
Leo Valdez is a son of Hephaestus. He likes to joke around and relies on his sense of humor to bury the pain he feels as a result of his troubled past. He is described as having curly brown hair, brown eyes, a cheerful face, a slim and scrawny build, dark skin, and a mischievous smile. He is Hispanic-American and speaks Spanish. Leo has the ability to create and manipulate fire, a skill that no child of Hephaestus has had for years.
He also has severe ADHD even by demigod standards. He is an excellent mechanic and at one point repairs a bronze dragon running wild in the camp’s woods, which he names Festus meaning “happy” in Latin. Inspired by a blueprint in Bunker 9, an abandoned bunker in the camp’s woods, and a picture he drew in his kindergarten time, he also creates the Argo II , the flying ship the seven demigods of the Great Prophecy sail on to reach Greece.
When Leo was eight, Gaia tricked him into burning down his mother Esperanza’s machine shop in Houston , resulting in her death. Leo’s remaining family blamed him for killing her and left him a foster child and runaway.
However, Leo and Piper have Mist-induced memories of meeting and becoming friends with Jason. He sometimes thinks of himself as a seventh wheel, as for the first three books of the Heroes of Olympus series he is the only person aboard the Argo II without a significant other, though he proves no less important or skilled than the others. Until he falls in love with Calypso, a nymph third-generation titanness, in The House of Hades , Leo flirts with almost every girl he meets to cover up his insecurities about never finding love.
In The Blood of Olympus , Leo sacrifices himself to annihilate Gaia and dies in the process, but is brought back to life using the Physician’s Cure and returns for Calypso on her island, Ogygia. This is an impressive feat, as nobody has ever been to Ogygia twice. However, Leo had the advantage of an astrolabe that had been created for just such a purpose by Odysseus as an old man.
Leo had gotten the device from two dwarfs shortly before landing on Ogygia and had learned from them that Odysseus had lacked a vital crystal to complete the device which Leo had convinced Calypso to give him before leaving the island.
He and Calypso then journey back to Camp Half-Blood, sending a magic scroll ahead to let his friends know he’s alive. When he does arrive at camp at the end of The Hidden Oracle , everyone lines up to punch him for keeping them worried for so long. Afterward, he announces that he and Calypso will be living at the Waystation and leading an ordinary life.
When the prophecy of Trophonius requires that someone must warn Camp Jupiter of an invasion, Leo does the task alone. He returns, but later learns of Jason’s death. Festus is a mechanical dragon made decades ago by the Hephaestus cabin at Camp Half-Blood, and given wings by Leo Valdez years later. Festus subsequently resurrects Leo with the Physician’s Cure and helps him to rescue Calypso. He is destroyed again in The Dark Prophecy , but is easily rebuilt by Leo who had redesigned Festus in case of such an eventuality.
She is fifteen in The Lost Hero. Unlike most children of Aphrodite, Piper is not particularly concerned with beauty or fashion. Piper is Cherokee on her father’s side. She has tan skin, eyes that change color constantly, and choppy chocolate-colored hair which she cuts herself.
She is of slim build and average height. Her demigod “powers” include “charmspeak” essentially, magical persuasion and the ability to speak French, as it is “the language of love”. She is also occasionally able to see visions in her magic dagger Katoptris Ancient Greek for “mirror” , which once belonged to Helen of Troy. The dagger lost that power after the battle against the giants in Athens.
Piper’s relationship with her father is mutually affectionate but strained, in part because of the small amount of attention he spares for her. When she was young, Piper used her persuasive skills to “borrow” ask for in charmspeak things to earn a little of his time. McLean’s relationship with his daughter begins to improve. Piper is also very close to Jason. Though she later learns it was all a trick of the Mist, she believed she was once his girlfriend while they attended the same school.
She works hard to recreate this relationship in real life when she comes to Camp Half-Blood. She is also friends with all of the seven quest members in The Heroes of Olympus , especially Annabeth, Leo and Percy. Piper’s main weapon is her dagger Katoptris, though she later acquires a magic cornucopia and uses it as a weapon. After being captured by pirates in The House of Hades , Piper asks Hazel to teach her sword fighting, using a jagged celestial bronze sword taken from the Boread Zethes.
In The Burning Maze , it is revealed that her relationship with Jason ended a few months earlier. Apollo, as Lester Papadopoulos, is confused because the cloud nymph, Mellie, had seemed angry at Jason, leading Apollo to mistakenly believe that Jason had broken up with Piper, while in fact, Piper had ended the relationship because she felt it was forced.
It is later unveiled that she wanted to discover herself and who she really was without the pressure of being the daughter of Aphrodite. The trick of the Mist that Hera used at the beginning of their relationship also contributed to the breakup as that meant that their relationship was technically “fake”. Still, she is heartbroken when he sacrifices himself in The Burning Maze. In The Tower of Nero , she is revealed to be in a relationship with another woman.
He was raised by the wolf goddess Lupa and her pack after his mother was compelled to give him up when he was two, then later lived at Camp Jupiter, the Roman equivalent of Camp Half-Blood. Jason inherited many special powers from his father Jupiter like summoning lightning bolts, controlling winds, flying, summoning storm spirits, and creating different types of storms like thunderstorms, rainstorms, and hurricanes.
Jason is also a master swordsman and spear user. He and Thalia are reunited in The Lost Hero , and Thalia later reveals that their mother told her that Jason was dead, and that this was what finally drove her to leave home. Jason is often described to be very handsome and attractive.
He has blond hair, electric blue eyes, and a scar above his upper lip, which is said to be from his attempt to eat a stapler at age two. Jason is also very muscular and athletic. By the age of fifteen, he has earned the rank of praetor and leads the legion with his longtime partner, Reyna who eventually falls in love with him.
Of all the characters in the series, Jason is the one who struggles the most with the differences between the Greek and Roman perspectives. When the Argo II is stuck in North Africa he must choose one identity or the other; he decides to consider himself a Greek, despite his parentage, and is subsequently unable to command a legion of Roman ghosts.
During The House of Hades it is revealed that Jason has plans to return to Camp Jupiter to improve it with things he learned at Camp Half-Blood, such as giving the fauns the Roman equivalent of a satyr more rights and responsibilities.
The research goal is to improve understanding of the immunopathology of TB and HIV, using this information to aid in developing novel therapeutic approaches and diagnostic biomarkers. His research has centered on understanding the mechanisms by which the human immune system recognises the Mycobacterium tuberculosis M. His work has a strong translational component, asking if both classically and non-classically restricted T cells are associated with infection with M.
The translational significance of this research is centred on informing the development of novel vaccines and diagnostics for childhood TB. Her current research focuses on HIV broadly neutralising antibodies and their interplay with the evolving virus.

Like she could almost see it, but not quite. And a final one. Nothing frozen, metal, flickering or otherwise. On either side of her were doors to buildings.
One was blue, with a light blue mark. She stepped back. Doors slammed. The doors changed to something that matched the rest of the surroundings. A black sea with white water. It looked like the moon was at the horizon, melting into the sea and tainting it.
Wherever we go, doors give us access to other Paths? After we finish one? He checked for himself that it worked. He gestured at the setup around the constructs. The buildings, the Lost network. Whatever else this was.
With that, her hopes and dreams, her big plans, her idea of romance, it all stopped, it was all cut short.
Being able to stop? To stop struggling against the insurmountable? Being able to put it all to rest? Avery had been okay, not that long ago. Then that stretch of loneliness, start of high school. Magic that taunted. Ways to collect specific, special flowers, dry them, and grind them up to make fairy glamour. Ways to use that glamour to make herself loved. The connection blocks had been part of that.
Hardy and then found it harder to go the next day, which made it harder the day after, and when faced with Ms. The spirit world. The ruins. She ran, hurdling a chasm. Brain tumor. Burning alive. She wished she had an excuse. A big reset button, especially if it would give her a pass for everything going on up until now. She could blame being weird and cowardly and distant on a tumor.
People would care about her again. The echo was following behind her, matching her footsteps. It fed details into that line of thought, made it feel real. For moments at a time, she was in the hospital, surrounded by family.
Then those moments became minutes. And as more gathered, even the space between those minutes-long stays were filled in with other impressions, other events.
She stopped as she saw someone. An older teenager with light brown skin, hair in a black braid that trailed down over one shoulder, wearing an old fashioned yellow raincoat, with cracks in the material. She stood by a small blue fire. The echo reached into and through her. Putting her back on the ward, walking, hobbling down the hallway. The teenager was put out of sight. Are you with the Belangers? With shaking hands, she brought the protein bar to her mouth. Avery twisted around, looking.
Something good to do. It is good, right? They want to be found? It had once been divided into threes, with some nudging and jostling for space, like three kids crammed into the back seat, elbowing at one another. The dresser had a mirror built into the back, flush against the wall, with a crack in it from when she, Kerry, and Declan had shared the room, pre-puberty, and had banged the dresser while roughhousing. She leaned forward, so she could see into that mirror. In my worst life, in a life when I hit my lowest point, found magic, and then used that as an excuse to push everyone away?
That version of me that ran away, instead of running toward? With the tweak, there were streaks of Ruins-dreck on the other Avery. Blurrier, but that kind of worked, because it was echo-ey. Fingerprints from echoes and from her own hands. Standing in opposition to that image, she could let the checkmarks stand out.
She pushed hands through hair, like she was going to do a ponytail, then let her hair drop. Snowdrop was crawling on her dad, who tried to hide her as he walked by the living room, where Declan was playing a game.
Snowdrop, midway through crawling on her dad, turned human, thumped the floor, and ran up the stairs. She put out an arm, and Snowdrop kind of collided into her, for a one armed, side-hug. There was no Snowdrop in the mirror. Just a blurry echo near Avery. She moved, flexing, then flexed some spirit-muscle, pushing something more Opossum-like into the scene. Until it was a ghostly opossum in the corner of the scene, tinted blue by the fire.
She moved her head around, tongue lolling out, teeth bared, trying to find the best angle for the reflection. Snowdrop bit her lightly through the fabric of her sweatshirt. Her dad opened the door, stepped into the room, then closed the door again. He stood with his back to it like he was guarding it. Avery looked at the mirror. The image there had been destroyed by the contrary images of her and Snowdrop play-fighting. Or if Kerry calls.
I think we can have the door stay open. He went to get the bell. Avery set about handling the rest of the prep. And the ring… stand at the other end of the room? This should be ok. You pull a paper out, and the door will go back to normal. Making the beds, maybe. Avery popped the case off, drew a rune, and put the case back carefully. The Garricks use this for their walkie-talkies and stuff. But closer.
Avery took the time her dad was out of the room to triple-check everything. Rope with weird knot at her waist, she had her magical tools, she had her bag. She put her cape on, then her mask. Her hat she left on the charm bracelet, loaded with runework, in case she ended up in a tough spot in reality. Dark green sweater, jeans, and her old running shoes with the air runes. She pushed the mask up onto the top of her head, the ribbon and her attachment to it keeping it roughly in place.
Her headphones with the ear-shaped rims at the edges were around her neck, and she had heavy eyeliner on her lower lids, in a way that drew out the perpetual circles around her eyes. She touched the spot she knew she had a golden checkmark on her arm, and then gestured, connecting it to the fireflies. Her fingers twisted as she did the gesture necessary to draw out some color and adjust the hue. The checkmarks pulled away, and trailed behind the fireflies, each firefly with a two-foot line of sparkles behind them.
One did a little twirl, like it was playing with the effect, before falling back into formation, circling around her. Avery texted her friends, checked the time, and then started getting things ready. Folded invitations and tickets in the doorframe… wedging it until it was closed. This would be what Wonderkand had to work out if they wanted to break in. White invitation, green, white, white, blue, white, green.
She arranged them, judged the door, and then decided to do another repetition, same pattern. It made experimentation hazardous. Wonderkand would have to work out the Path entry requirements, which, okay, unfortunately they had the tools to sort of figure out the right ballpark.
Just trying to follow through with the Garricks.
