Take a look at the following screenshot for better understanding. Built on the. Windows PowerShell commands, called cmdlets, let you manage the computers from the command line. Windows PowerShell providers let you access data stores, such as the Registry and Certificate Store, as easily as you access the file system.
In addition, Windows PowerShell has a rich expression parser and a fully developed scripting language. So in simple words you can complete all the tasks that you do with GUI and much more. PowerShell Icon can be found in the task bar and in the start menu. Just by clicking on the icon, it will open. The latest version of PowerShell is 5. In Windows PowerShell ISE, you can run commands and write, test, and debug scripts in a single Windows-based graphic user interface with multiline editing, tab completion, syntax coloring, selective execution, context-sensitive help, and support for right-to-left languages.
You can use menu items and keyboard shortcuts to perform many of the same tasks that you would perform in the Windows PowerShell console. For example, when you debug a script in the Windows PowerShell ISE, to set a line breakpoint in a script, right-click the line of code, and then click Toggle Breakpoint. Or click on the downward Arrow as shown in the following screenshot.
The following table will be open — It has three sections, which include — The PowerShell Console with number 1, then Scripting File number 2 and the third is the Command Module where you can find the module. The first step is to go to the Get-Help command which gives you an explanation about how to give a command and its parameter.
Administration of servers is performed through Windows Management Instrumentation. If in case it is disabled, you can enable it by Opening PowerShell and then typing Enable- PSRemoting as shown in the screenshot given below. This allows access to modify the settings for each of the three firewall profiles, which are — Domain, Private and Public and IPsec settings. As you Know outbound traffic is the traffic generated from server towards the internet and inbound traffic is vice versa. It is important because this enables us to work remotely on the server. To do this, we have the following two options.
For the first option, we have to follow the steps given below. Step 5: Type user that you want to allow access. It tells how much CPU is consuming every application and on the right side of the table, it monitors in real time the chart of CPU usage.
The Memory tells how much memory every application is consuming and in the right side of the table it is being monitored in real time in the chart of CPU usage. The Disk tab splits it by the different hard drives. The network tab will show the processes and their network bytes sent and received. EXE to install it, but in the version, it is recommended by Microsoft not to use it anymore.
To continue with Installation follow the steps given below. Step 2: Click the Next button. A box will be explaining additional roles services or features which are also required to install domain services. Now that the installation of DC role is finished, you have to configure it for you server.
Once selected fill in a DSRM password in the provided password fields. The server will restart several times. The installation is now complete. To Create an OU user, please follow the steps given below. Step 2: To create an OU named Management. Check the Protect container from accidental deletion option.
This option will protect this object from accidental deletion. Step 6: Now type-in the password. When ReFS is used in conjunction with a mirror space or a parity space, detected corruption — both metadata and user data, when integrity streams are enabled — can be automatically repaired using the alternate copy provided by Storage Spaces. Historically, file systems were often susceptible to data corruption that would require the system to be taken offline for repair.
With ReFS, if corruption occurs, the repair process is both localized to the area of corruption and performed online, requiring no volume downtime. Although rare, if a volume does become corrupted or you choose not to use it with a mirror space or a parity space, ReFS implements salvage, a feature that removes the corrupt data from the namespace on a live volume and ensures that good data is not adversely affected by non-repairable corrupt data. Because ReFS performs all repair operations online, it does not have an offline chkdsk command.
The integrity scanner periodically scans the volume, identifying latent corruptions and proactively triggering a repair of that corrupt data. Unrecoverable corruption of the ReFS directory metadata affects only those files that are in the directory in which the corruption has occurred.
Using MSA, you can considerably reduce the risk of system accounts running system services being compromised. MSA has one major problem which is the usage of such service account only on one computer. It means that MSA Service Accounts cannot work with cluster or NLB services, which operate simultaneously on multiple servers and use the same account and password.
This group should be created before in the Groups. In the This account box in the Log on tab type the name of the service account. After the changes are saved, the service has to be restarted.
We have selected the name as Test GPO. You can find many pages to download the ISO file. Here, we take the first ISO file as an example. To install this operating system on your computer, you should make sure the machine meets the minimum system requirements:. Free Download. Then, boot the PC from that drive for a clean install.

Windows Home Server code-named Quattro [4] is a home server operating system from Microsoft. It was announced on 7 January at the Consumer Electronics Show by Bill Gates , [5] released to manufacturing on 16 July [6] and officially released on 4 November Windows Home Server was based on Windows Server R2 and was intended to be a solution for homes with multiple connected PCs to offer file sharing , automated backups, print server , and remote access.
It is paired with the Windows Home Server Console—client software accessed from another computer on the network to provide a graphical management interface. Windows Home Server , the next version of this operating system, was released on 6 April Windows Home Server was the brainchild of Charlie Kindel who was the General Manager for the product from through Microsoft has ended support for Windows Home Server on January 8, The configuration interface was designed to be user-friendly enough that it could be set up without prior knowledge of server administration.
The configuration interface, called the Home Server Console , was delivered as a Remote Desktop Protocol application to remote PCs while the application ran on the server itself, the GUI was rendered on the remote system.
The server itself required no video card or peripherals; it was designed to require only an Ethernet card and at least one Windows XP , Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer.
Windows Home Server Drive Extender was a file-based replication system that provided three key capabilities: [21]. With drive extender, users could add larger capacity hard disk drives and then could offline lesser capacity drives to upgrade capacity online. For example, if the user was reaching capacity of the share with five terabytes of the six-terabyte capacity used with six one-terabyte drives then the user could offline one of the one-terabyte drives and physically replace it with a two-terabyte drive.
The WHS automatically equalizes the redistribution of used space across all available drives on a regular basis. The offline process would compress the used data across the minimum amount of drives allowing for the removal of one of the lesser capacity drives. Once replaced with a drive of higher capacity the system will automatically redistribute used capacity among the pool to ensure space capacity on each drive.
Users specifically those who configure a family’s home server dealt with storage at two levels: Shared Folders and Disks. The only concepts relevant regarding disks was whether they had been “added” to the home server’s storage pool or not and whether the disk appeared healthy to the system or not.
This was in contrast with Windows’ Logical Disk Manager which requires a greater degree of technical understanding in order to correctly configure a RAID array. Shared Folders had a name, a description, permissions, and a flag indicating whether duplication redundancy was on or off for that folder. If duplication was on for a Shared Folder which was the default on multi-disk Home Server systems and not applicable to single disk systems then the files in that Shared Folder were duplicated and the effective storage capacity was halved.
However, in situations where a user may not have wanted data duplicated e. TV shows that had been archived to a Windows Home Server from a system running Windows Media Center , Drive Extender provided the capability to not duplicate such files if the server was short on capacity or manually mark a complete content store as not for duplication.
A known limitation of Drive Extender was that it in some cases changed timestamp of directories and files when data was moved around between disks. According to Microsoft this was expected behavior. This caused unexpected behavior when using clients that sort media based on date. The aforementioned programs worked fine with WHS; however, files may have appeared out of order due to this caveat. Criticism of Drive Extender’s removal mainly related to it being seen as a core feature of Windows Home Server and a key reason for adoption.
Windows Home Server Computer Backup automatically backs up all of the computers in a home to the server using an image-based system that ensures point-in-time-based restoration of either entire PCs or specific files and folders.
This technology uses Volume Shadow Services VSS technology on the client computer to take an image based backup of a running computer.
Because the backup operates on data at the cluster level, single instancing can be performed to minimize the amount of data that travels over the network and that will ultimately be stored on the home server.
This single instancing gives the server the ability to store only one instance of data, no matter if the data originated from another computer, another file, or even data within the same file. Computer backup images are not duplicated on the server, so if a server hard drive fails, backups could be lost. The “Server Backup” feature added in Power Pack 1 does not include duplication of backup images. The system also offers an SSL secured web browser based interface over the Internet to the shared file stores.
The web interface also allows the uploading to and downloading of files from the content stores. The system also supports Terminal Services Gateway , allowing remote control of the desktop of any Windows computer on the home network.
The web interface also supports embedding the Remote Desktop ActiveX control, to provide remote access to home computers from within the web interface directly. Remote sessions can also connect to the Home Server console to configure the server over the internet. Windows Home Server allows for developers to publish community and commercial add-ins designed to enhance the Windows Home Server with added functionality.
Files stored on Windows Home Server are also available through a Windows share , opening compatibility to a wide variety of operating systems. Also, the Administration console is available via Remote Desktop, allowing administration from unsupported platforms.
However, unofficial workarounds allow Connector software to work on XP x Windows Home Server has not officially supported Domain Controller capability and cannot readily join a Windows Server domain. Wireless networking is supported.
Dedicated devices will have the operating system pre-installed and may be supplied with a server recovery disk which reloads the OS over a network connection. The first release of Windows Home Server, RTM release to manufacturing , suffered from a file corruption flaw whereby files saved directly to or edited on shares on a WHS device could become corrupted. Even though the issue was first acknowledged in October , [37] Microsoft formally warned users of the seriousness of the flaw on 20 December This issue was fixed by Power Pack 1, released on 21 July Power Pack 1 added the ability to back up files stored on the Shared Folders, to an external drive.
However, there remains no way to back up the installed server operating system. Backing-up of the client backup database is available either manually using the instructions provided by Microsoft on page 24 of this document or can be done using the WHS BDBB add-in written by Alex Kuretz and available from this website.
Some computer systems are available only with a bundled Windows Home Server license. As is the case with other versions of Windows it is possible to request a refund of the license fees paid for Windows Home Server. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The host without the latest Windows Server R2 service pack installed is vulnerable to viruses and multiple security attacks. On January 13, , Windows Server R2 exited mainstream support and entered the extended support phase; Microsoft continued to provide security updates every month for Windows Server R2, however, free technical support, warranty claims, and design changes were no longer being offered.
Extended support ended on January 14, , about less than eleven years after the release of Windows Server R2. In August , researchers reported that “all modern versions of Microsoft Windows” may be at risk for “critical” system compromise due to design flaws of hardware device drivers from multiple providers. InfoWorld noted that Server ‘s use of Windows 8’s panned “Metro” user windoes was countered by Microsoft’s increasing emphasis on the Server Core mode, which had been “fleshed out with new depth and ease-of-use features” and increased use of the “practically mandatory” PowerShell.
A second release, Windows Server R2which is derived from essentialz Windows 8. Microsoft originally planned to end support for Windows Server and Windows Server R2 on January 10,but in order to provide customers the standard transition lifecycle timeline, Microsoft extended Windows Server and R2 support in March by 9 months. Because Windows Server Datacenter has no limit on the number of virtual exsentials per licensed server, only enough licenses for the physical server are serger for any number of virtual instances of Windows Server Datacenter. If the number of processor chips or virtual instances is an odd number, the number of licenses required is the same as the next even number.

Microsoft characterized the retail packaging for Windows Vista as “designed to be user-friendly, a small, hard, plastic container designed to protect the software inside for life-long use”; [7] it opens sideways to reveal the Windows Vista DVD suspended in a clear plastic case.
With the exception of Windows Vista Starter, all editions support both IA bit and x64 bit processor architectures. Users could purchase and download Windows Vista directly from Microsoft through the Windows Marketplace before the service’s discontinuation. Microsoft sold these licenses online through its website. Most bit programs can run natively, though applications that rely on device drivers will not run unless those device drivers have been written for x64 platforms.
All bit versions of Microsoft operating systems impose a 16 TB limit on address space. Processes created on the bit editions of Windows Vista can have 8 TB in virtual memory for user processes and 8 TB for kernel processes to create a virtual memory of 16 TB. The Commission concluded that Microsoft “broke European Union competition law by leveraging its near monopoly in the market for PC operating systems onto the markets for work group server operating systems and for media players.
Unlike that decision, however, Microsoft was also forced to withdraw the non-compliant versions of Windows from the South Korean market. As a continuance of these requirements, Microsoft released “N” and “KN” variants of some editions of Windows Vista that exclude Windows Media Player, as well as “K” and “KN” editions that include links to third-party media player and instant messaging software.
Two additional editions of Windows Vista have been released for use by developers of embedded devices. These are binary identical editions to those available in retail, but licensed exclusively for use in embedded devices. Unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows Vista does not support compliance checking during installation; compliance checking previously allowed users to insert a disc as evidence that the operating system was being upgraded over a previous version, which would allow users to enter an upgrade license to perform a clean install.
However, upgrading from a bit edition to a bit edition or downgrading from bit edition to a bit edition requires a clean install. The following chart indicates the possible upgrade paths:. It is part of the Windows NT family of operating systems and was released on April 24, An updated version , Windows Server R2, was released to manufacturing on December 6, Windows Server is based on the consumer operating system, Windows XP.
Windows Server is the follow-up to Windows Server, incorporating compatibility and other features from Windows XP. Unlike Windows , Windows Server ‘s default installation has none of the server components enabled, to reduce the attack surface of new machines. Windows Server includes compatibility modes to allow older applications to run with greater stability. It was made more compatible with Windows NT 4.
Windows Server brought in enhanced Active Directory compatibility and better deployment support to ease the transition from Windows NT 4. Windows Server is the first server edition of Windows to support the IA64 and x64 architectures.
The product went through several name changes during the course of development. When first announced in , it was known by its codename “Whistler Server”; it was named “Windows Server” for a brief time in mid, followed by “Windows.
NET Server” and “Windows. NET Server “. After Microsoft chose to focus the “. NET” branding on the. Windows Server was the first Microsoft Windows version which was thoroughly subjected to semi-automated testing for bugs with a software system called PREfast [17] developed by computer scientist Amitabh Srivastava at Microsoft Research. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates stated that Windows Server was Microsoft’s “most rigorously tested software to date.
Microsoft used Windows Server ‘s kernel in the development of Windows Vista. Windows Server comes in a number of editions, each targeted towards a particular size and type of business. NET technology. Domain controller and Terminal Services functionality are not included on Web Edition. However, Remote Desktop for Administration is available. Only 10 concurrent file-sharing connections are allowed at any moment. NET Framework version 2.
When using it for storage or as a back-end with another remote server as the front-end, CALs may still be required. Microsoft Windows Server Standard is aimed towards small to medium-sized businesses. Standard Edition supports file and printer sharing, offers secure Internet connectivity, and allows centralized desktop application deployment. A specialized variant for the x64 architecture was released in April Windows Server Enterprise is aimed towards medium to large businesses.
It also provides the ability to hot-add supported hardware. Windows Server Enterprise is also the required edition to issue custom certificate templates. Windows Server Datacenter is designed [25] for infrastructures demanding high security and reliability. Windows Server is available for IA, Itanium, and x64 processors. It supports a maximum of 32 physical processors on IA platform or 64 physical processors on x64 and IA hardware.
The Datacenter edition, like the Enterprise edition, supports 8-node clustering. Clustering increases availability and fault tolerance of server installations by distributing and replicating the service among many servers. This edition supports clustering with each cluster having its own dedicated storage, or with all cluster nodes connected to a common SAN.
Windows Compute Cluster Server CCS , released in June , is designed for high-end applications that require high performance computing clusters. It is designed to be deployed on numerous computers to be clustered together to achieve supercomputing speeds.
Each Compute Cluster Server network comprises at least one controlling head node and subordinate processing nodes that carry out most of the work. It ties nodes together with a powerful inter-process communication mechanism which can be complex because of communications between hundreds or even thousands of processors working in parallel. The application programming interface consists of over functions.
A job launcher enables users to execute jobs to be executed in the computing cluster. Windows Storage Server , a part of the Windows Server series, is a specialized server operating system for network-attached storage NAS. Launched in at Storage Decisions in Chicago, it is optimized for use in file and print sharing and also in storage area network SAN scenarios. It is only available through Original equipment manufacturers OEMs.
Windows Storage Server NAS equipment can be headless , which means that they are without any monitors, keyboards or mice, and are administered remotely. Such devices are plugged into any existing IP network and the storage capacity is available to all users. Multiple such NAS servers can be clustered to appear as a single device, which allows responsibility for serving clients to be shared in such a way that if one server fails then other servers can take over often termed a failover which also improves fault-tolerance.
Windows Storage Server can also be used to create a Storage Area Network , in which the data is transferred in terms of chunks rather than files, thus providing more granularity to the data that can be transferred. This provides higher performance to database and transaction processing applications.
Single instance storage SIS scans storage volumes for duplicate files, and moves the duplicate files to the common SIS store. The file on the volume is replaced with a link to the file. Windows Storage Server R2 provides an index-based, full-text search based on the indexing engine already built into Windows server.
Windows Storage Server can be promoted to function as a domain controller; however, this edition is not licensed to run directory services. It can be joined to an existing domain as a member server. Windows Small Business Server SBS is a software suite which includes Windows Server and additional technologies aimed at providing a small business with a complete technology solution.
SBS has the following design limitations, mainly affecting Active Directory: [30]. Windows Home Server was announced on January 7, , at the Consumer Electronics Show by Bill Gates and is intended to be a solution for homes with multiple connected PCs to offer file sharing, automated backups, and remote access. Intended use was for building firewall, VPN caching servers and similar appliances. Availability of the original version ended May 28, Availability of R2 ended March 5, End of extended support was July 14, all variants except Storage Server [9] , and End of Licence was May 28, R2 and original.
All variants continued to receive Critical security updates until the end of extended support: [37]. While many features of the bit variant of Windows XP were brought over into Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, other limitations imposed by constraints such as only supporting bit drivers, and support for bit programs being dropped led to incompatibilities with the bit Windows XP editions available. Among the improvements are many of the same updates that were provided to Windows XP users with Service Pack 2.
Features that are added with Service Pack 1 include:. A full list of updates is available in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Service Pack 2 for Windows Server was released on March 13, This was followed by build , known as Beta 2 Refresh. The final build is Microsoft has described Service Pack 2 as a “standard” service pack release containing previously released security updates, hotfixes, and reliability and performance improvements.
Service Pack 2 also adds Windows Server Scalable Networking Pack SNP , [48] which allows hardware acceleration for processing network packets, thereby enabling faster throughput. Windows Server R2 is an updated release of Windows Server , which contains a copy of Windows Server SP1 on one CD and a host of optionally installed new features on another disc, similar to Microsoft Plus! New features of Windows Server R2 include: [51].
On July 13, , Windows Server ‘s mainstream support expired and the extended support phase began. During the extended support phase, Microsoft continued to provide security updates; however, free technical support, warranty claims, and design changes are no longer being offered.
Although Windows Server is unsupported, Microsoft released an emergency security patch in May for the OS as well as other unsupported versions of Windows including Windows Vista and Windows 7 RTM without a service pack , to address a vulnerability that was being leveraged by the WannaCry ransomware attack.
Anonymous users from managed to compile the Windows Server source code, as well as a Twitter user who posted videos of the process on YouTube proving that the code was genuine, [57] but was removed from the platform on copyright grounds by Microsoft. The leak was incomplete as it was missing the Winlogon source code and some other components. Microsoft issued a statement stating that it was investigating the leaks. But it is not the last one, as the last one is Windows Server Officially it was released on August 1st, and is being sold as a commercial version only.
It can add other disks to the storage pools and make available to the users without impacting them. Each one of them has their own limitation accept the Datacenter version which is also the most expensive one.
Windows Server — Installation Windows Server In this chapter, we will discuss regarding the requirements and prerequisites of the Windows Server System Requirements Although most of the servers nowadays probably have the necessary requirements for Windows Server It will certainly be useful to know them in case you want to upgrade from an older system. One important thing to note here is that the installation process itself will verify your computer hardware and let you know if it qualifies for a Windows Server installation.
If not, then you will need to upgrade your hardware. Installation The following steps are to be adhered for the installation of Windows Server At the end, if you decide to buy the license of your Windows server R2. This will continue for about a couple of minutes as shown in the following screenshot. Step 4: After the files are loaded, you will see the screen of language settings of installation, keyboard, time and currency format.
Generally, all the default ones are also good enough to start with. Click Next. Step 7: Wait until the files are loaded and then you will see the following screen. Step 9: The following screen will appear. After you have done this process then you can select the partition where the Windows server R2 will be installed in our case we have one partition.
Once all this is done, then click on Next. Step Once the reboot is done the following screen will appear. Step Once all this is done, you have completed the installation process and the following screen will appear. Windows Server — Server Roles Windows Server Like the previous version, Windows Server has the following roles which can be used and in the subsequent chapter, we will see how to install and configure the most important ones.
The following picture shows all the roles. A small reminder! This option is — if you want to install the services in the physical server like being done in the following screenshot.
The rules that are currently enabled are denoted by green checkbox icon, while disabled rules display a grey checkbox icon.

Reviews of Windows Server have been generally positive. InfoWorld noted that Server ‘s use of Windows 8’s panned “Metro” user interface was countered by Microsoft’s increasing emphasis on the Server Core mode, which had been “fleshed out with new depth and ease-of-use features” and increased use of the “practically mandatory” PowerShell.
A second release, Windows Server R2 , which is derived from the Windows 8. Microsoft originally planned to end support for Windows Server and Windows Server R2 on January 10, , but in order to provide customers the standard transition lifecycle timeline, Microsoft extended Windows Server and R2 support in March by 9 months.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Server operating system by Microsoft released in Closed-source Source-available through Shared Source Initiative.
This program allows customers to purchase security updates in yearly installments for the operating system through at most October 13, only for volume licensed editions.

Each license of Windows Server Standard allows up to two virtual instances of Windows Server Standard on that physical server. If more virtual instances of Windows Server Standard are needed, each additional license of Windows Server allows up to two more virtual instances of Windows Server Standard, even though the physical server itself may have sufficient licenses for its processor chip count.
Because Windows Server Datacenter has no limit on the number of virtual instances per licensed server, only enough licenses for the physical server are needed for any number of virtual instances of Windows Server Datacenter.
If the number of processor chips or virtual instances is an odd number, the number of licenses required is the same as the next even number.
For example, a single-processor-chip server would still require 1 license, the same as if the server were two-processor-chip and a five-processor-chip server would require 3 licenses, the same as if the server were six-processor-chip, and if 15 virtual instances of Windows Server Standard are needed on one server, 8 licenses of Windows Server , which can cover up to 16 virtual instances, are needed assuming, in this example, that the processor chip count does not exceed In that case, the number of physical processors cannot exceed twice the number of licenses assigned to the server.
