Click Start , right-click Computer , click Properties , and then click Advanced system settings. Under User Profiles , click Settings. You can configure the default local user profile to become a mandatory profile. By doing this, you can have one central profile that is used by all users. To do this, you have to prepare the mandatory profile location, copy the local default user profile to the mandatory profile location, and then configure a user’s profile location to point to the mandatory profile. On a central file server, create a new folder or use an existing folder that you use for roaming user profiles.
If you are creating a new folder, share the folder by using a name that is suitable for your organization. The share permissions for shared folders that contain roaming user profiles must enable Full Control permissions for the Authenticated Users group.
The share permissions for folders that are dedicated to storing mandatory user profiles should enable Read permissions for the Authenticated Users group and enable Full Control permissions for the Administrators group. Create a new folder in the folder that is created or identified in step 1. The name of this new folder should start with the logon name of the user account if the mandatory user profile is for a specific user. If the mandatory user profile is for more than one user, name it accordingly.
Finish naming the folder by adding. The example that is used in step 3 has the folder name mandatory. Therefore, the final name of the following folder for this user is mandatory. Log on to the computer that has the customized local default user profile by using an account that has administrative credentials.
In the Copy profile to text box, type the network path of the Windows default user folder that you created in the Step 1: Prepare the mandatory profile location section. On the central file server, locate the folder that you created in the Step 1: Prepare the mandatory profile location section.
Click the View tab, click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, click to clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, click Yes to dismiss the warning, and then click OK to apply the changes and close the dialog box.
Previously it was possible to copy profiles by using the System Control Panel item. This copy to default profile option is now disabled as it could add data that made the profile unusable. Right-click the user account to which you want to apply the mandatory user profile, and then click Properties.

Although moving folders one at a time introduces additional steps, you’ll avoid potential problems, which may be something that could happen while moving the main account folder.
After you complete the steps, the account folder will relocate to its original location. You may need to repeat the steps to restore the remaining folders to their previous location. The only caveat about this process is that it’ll not change the default save locations for some apps. For example, if you use the Edge, Chrome, or Firefox, these browsers will continue to use the original path to try and save files. If you want to avoid problems, it’s recommended to change the default save location for these and other apps if applicable.
Here’s an example changing the settings on Microsoft Edge:. Once you complete the steps, future files will download to the new location by default in the new storage. How did I find out? After a format, my OneDrive exploded because it tried to upload some 50GB of my game saves. Also, for everyone who can’t put the directory out of OneDrive: log out of OneDrive.
Otherwise, it may error out. That’s an option that defaults to This PC only. Aha, good to know thanks. I assume I’ll still ahve to do some manual repointing even with the new settings? Been doing this for the past twenty five years Mauro Huculak, you’re doing a great job out here, a thanks wouldn’t sum it up.
Appreciate the feedback! I don’t understand why there’s not a default, easy way to do this. Users are promised some great cloud storage with OneDrive, but their files don’t even save there by default! You’re right, there should be an easier way.
But now it already defaults to OneDrive during a fresh install of Windows. And I can tell you, it will annoy the crap out of a lot of people, me included.

Many games and programs save their stuff in Documents folder.
Saves, mods, all sort of content. My Documents folder has some 50GB. My OneDrive limit is half of it. And the standard free limit is 5GB. I was never asked to migrate this stuff to OneDrive, and it took more time than it should have to make it normal again. Actually it is there by default but that depends on the users themselves making that choice at first boot of their installation. Reason two maybe because of the application itself being out of date therefore isn’t going to save the files in the proper place which is less likely the case but it is possible.
Takes me a few seconds to move user folders on a new install. How do you change OneDrive to another drive? Can you use an SD card as the other drive? I moved the default folders Download , Documents, Desktop , etc a while ago and everything was fine, until I installed the “Windows 10 April Update”.

I’ve read several forum discussions on answering how to deal with the subject problem because Windows Pro misspelled my name in setting it up. And it’s quite annoying every time I see it. Basically, this can’t be corrected without trouble for the average user. It’s chilling to defaulf how the tech giants are increasing the complexity of their applications, software, and use thereof while simultaneously limiting ease of self-determination and authentic choice by the individual.

How to get a free Windows 10 upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8. I’ve read several forum discussions on answering how to deal with the subject problem because Windows Pro misspelled my name in setting it up. And it’s quite annoying every time I see it. Basically, this can’t be corrected without trouble for the average user. It’s complicated and requires the person using the software to adjust to the software, not the software to adjust to the person.
It’s chilling to realize how the tech giants are increasing the complexity of their applications, software, and use thereof while simultaneously limiting ease of self-determination and authentic choice by the individual. I have to use technology in my job, particularly MS Office. But I’ll be quit happy when I reach retirement age or move to a non ball-n-chained profession , and I don’t have to work for technology, and I get to control how much technology invades my life and personal preferences.
Although I won’t live to see the day, I hope very much humans will grow weary of this intrusive, degrading new toy and put it in it’s deserved place as a servant, rather than tyrant. On Windows 10, each account has a set of default folders that allow users to save and organize their files, including documents, pictures, downloads, and other data on the device. However, over time, depending on your usage, the folders can grow in size significantly, and if you have a computer with limited storage using a different location for example external hard drive or partition can help to avoid running out of space on the system drive, which can be an issue when it comes the time to install new releases of Windows 10 or a new application.
Also, you never want to use a device with a drive at capacity as it can affect system performance. In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to move the default user account folders to a different drive or partition.
Once you complete the steps, the default account folders will move to the new location, and future files will save in this location by default.
Mauro Huculak is technical writer for WindowsCentral.

Well, you’ll be relieved to know that apparently OneDrive now does that automatically with fresh installs.
You internet security settings blocked one of more files from being opened I tried everything but nothing seems to work, except of moving the folders Desktop, Downloads, etc. If there are any suggestions or ideas how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated.
